Football Sunday Scrimmage Recap and Notes

The Terrapin football team’s second intrasquad scrimmage of preseason camp Sunday saw some big plays early and then dragged on late.

The first-team offense played mostly against the second-team defense and the second-team offense played mostly against the first-team defense as coach Ralph Friedgen wanted to see how certain reserve players played against the top guys on the depth chart.

The offenses had more success than they did last Saturday in the first scrimmage of the spring, and Friedgen said he thought the running game was better than what it has been so far.

Running back Gary Douglas had a big day, finishing with 17 carries for 122 yards mostly against the first-team defense, and Friedgen said the redshirt freshman is battling with Morgan Green for the Terps’ third running back spot behind Da’Rel Scott and Davin Meggett.

“He has probably more elusive moves than any back we have. He has very quick lateral movement,” Friedgen said. “We definitely wanted to see him and Morgan get a lot of reps today to see who it’s going to be for that No. 3 guy. He made a good account of himself.”

Wide receiver Torrey Smith also played really well after Friedgen singled him out earlier this week as a player who wasn’t performing up to his potential.

Smith finished with 2 catches for 39 yards and a touchdown, and also caught about a 60-yard touchdown pass in the early part of the workout before the team started tracking stats.

He said he felt relieved to be done with his online summer course that ended this week and been weighing on him.

“It felt good to just focus on football instead of class,” Smith said. “It’s hard during camp trying to focus on class because football is the priority.”

True freshman defensive back Eric Franklin also made an impression, intercepting two passes and dropping a third after he didn’t quite get his hands up in time. He led the defense with eight tackles.

Friedgen said he is hoping Franklin can be the Terps’ fifth safety. He got some extra reps today because starting strong safety Jamari McCollough sat out the scrimmage with an undisclosed minor injury.

Defensive tackle Travis Ivey also didn’t participate, but Friedgen said Ivey should be back to full participation in practice this week. Linebacker Alex Wujciak, center Phil Costa, left tackle Bruce Campbell and wide receiver Adrian Cannon only played a few snaps today because Friedgen said he has been satisfied with their play so far in camp and he wanted to see other guys get more reps in those positions.

When Campbell was in the game, he picked up a fumble and rumbled down the field for about 25 yards. Defensive players looked very hesitant to try to tackle the 6-foot-7, 310-pounder.

The Terps will be back on the field for another day of two-a-days tomorrow.

TERP NOTES: The Terps made it through another scrimmage without any major injuries. Defensive tackle Carl Russell left with an ankle injury and did not return, but Friedgen said it shouldn’t be too serious.

Friedgen was pleased with true freshman running back Caleb Porzel, and said he thinks Porzel will end up seeing the field this season instead of redshirting.

“I got a feeling we’ll play that kid somewhere just because he’s so electric,” Friedgen said. “I need to get in a guy that can get the ball across the goal line.”

Friedgen said Mike Barbour had the starting kicking job just about wrapped up until he missed three in a row at the end of the scrimmage and opened the competition again. It looks like that competition is between Barbour and true freshman Nick Ferrara, as other contender Nick Wallace has earned himself a place in Friedgen’s doghouse.

“I can only work in so many. [Wallace] has been inconsistent and I’m trying to find a guy who can be consistent,” Friedgen said. “I only got 13 days left to find a kicker, so I can’t be wasting time on guys who really haven’t shown me anything”

Terps now 2-0 after victory at Fordham

Terrapin womens soccer player Jasmyne Spencer has opened the 2009 season on a tear and today was no different against Fordham.

The sophomore out of Bay Shore, N.Y., scored the only two goals of the day for the Terps as they went on to beat the Rams, 2-1. The Terps (2-0) have back-to-back wins to begin the season for the first time since 2002, when they defeated Towson and Duke.

“It feels great,” coach Brian Pensky said. “Our soccer and finishing has been good. Today was more about guts and determination. We’ve had four games in ten days, including preseason, and this was Fordham’s first game. We didn’t let up.”

The wins can mostly be attributed to the scoring outburst of Spencer. The forward, who scored her first career goal in the season opener against Army Friday, was able to separate herself from the defense to break the game open with a goal in the 29th minute.

“Spencer has been terrific,” Pensky said. “She had a very good preseason and is a constant threat. She has the ability to change the game in a second. The kid has a ton of heart and determination.”

Early in the second half Fordham was able to tie the score up at one with a goal by Brittany Hogan. Only 26 seconds later, Spencer came through once again. Using her speed, Spencer broke free from the defense to score the decisive goal after the goalkeeper fell to the ground leaving an open net.

Terps goalkeeper Mary Casey made four stops on the afternoon, while the defense held the Rams to six shots overall. Meanwhile, the Terps offense continued to find success, finishing with 11 shots. Sophomore Ashley Groves assisted on both scoring plays today and has three assists overall on the year.

“We’re going to keep getting better in terms of our discipline on both sides of the ball,” Pensky said. “Today the heat set in a bit and we lost our discipline. But the mentality of our team is outstanding right now.”

The Terps will start practice back up Tuesday in preparation for their home opener on Friday night. The Terps face the Seton Hall Pirates at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field.

Scrimmage Postponed to Sunday

The Terrapin football team has pushed its scrimmage back to Sunday afternoon because of the threat of bad weather later today. Sunday was scheduled to be an off-day, so the Terps are just taking Saturday off instead.

Women’s Soccer Wins Season Opener

After a scoreless first half, the Terrapin women’s soccer team exploded for three goals in its season opener against Army on Friday night.

Adjusting to a new lineup and season beginning nerves, the Terps were unable to get their offense rolling. That all ended when Ashley Grove jump-started the offense with a goal in the 55th minute, as the Terps when on to defeat the defending Patriot League champions, 3-0.

From the beginning the Terps took control of the game and displayed a strong defense. The Black Knights were limited to only one shot on goal, while the Terps had twelve. Maryland goalkeeper Mary Casey registered her fourth career shutout performance.

A minute after Grove ended the tie, sophomore Jasmyne Spencer scored her first career goal to put the Terps up by two. Spencer, who scored in both the Terps’ preseason matches, was assisted by Casey and midfielder Caitlin McDowell.

The last goal of the evening was scored by Caitlin Mooney, who was playing in her first career game. The Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year scored in the 74th minute and was unassisted. Mooney, who did not start the game, was one of four freshman to get playing time in the game.

The Terps are now 3-0-2 in season openers under coach Brian Pensky. The team will stay in New York to face Fordham on Sunday at 1pm.

Stay tuned for more women’s soccer updates throughout the weekend and the rest of the season.

Friday’s Evening Practice Cancelled; Saturday’s Scrimmage Open to Media

I just wanted to briefly tie up a couple of loose ends from yesterday’s blog post.

Ralph Friedgen ended up cancelling the Terps’ evening practice yesterday. Apparently this is a not an unprecedented move, and Friedgen felt it was a good time to give the team a break.

This evening’s scrimmage at Byrd Stadium will be open to the media and to members of the Terrapin Club and Maryland Gridiron Network. It is not open to the public.

Terrapin Volleyball Set to Start Saturday

I hate to break this long line of football reporting, but there are other sports being played this fall in College Park, one of them being volleyball.

The Terrapin volleyball team is set to make its first appearance on the Comcast Center Pavillion’s floor since last season this Saturday at 4 p.m. The Terps are hosting their first ever Alumni Scrimmage, and hope that it will become an annual event.

The team has been practicing since August 10, and although this match will not count toward any formal record, it will be the first outside competition the team has seen coming into their second season under coach Tim Horsmon.

After Saturday, the team only has six more days of preparation before the 2009 season begins. The Terps start the season off in the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational on August 28, and will play Stony Brook, followed by Youngstown State and Villanova the next day.

It will be interesting to see how the Terps have adjusted in their second season behind Horsmon’s coaching. The first one did not go very well as the team went 6-26, the lowest win total in program history. The three game tournament should show how much they have progressed in his system.

More on Torrey Smith: Friday Terp Football Notes

Coach Ralph Friedgen said the Terrapin football team looked tired in the hot and humid conditions during practice Friday morning, and he was forced to start a couple of practice periods over again to wake some guys up.

Friedgen has praised his team’s work ethic all preseason camp, and he said the players fought through their fatigue pretty well today.

He singled out center Phil Costa, linebacker Adrian Moten and safety Kenny Tate as the stars of camp so far.

Friedgen had mentioned his disappointment yesterday with the preseason camp performance of wide receiver Torrey Smith.

He elaborated on that today and also gave a possible reason for Smith’s sluggish practices.

Unexpected Depth at LB, Vellano Injured: Thursday Terp Football Notes

The Terrapin football team participated in a behind-closed-doors mock scrimmage during practice Thursday, and coach Ralph Friedgen said the Terps “Got out of that what I wanted to.”

Friedgen said the Terps looked good on defense, and while the offense made a few big plays poor protection from the offensive line limited what they could do.

The first and second units each ran about 40 plays, Friedgen said.

Friedgen then went through his regular daily rundown about the Terps’ various positions, and he pointed out that the emergence of several young linebackers has added some unexpected depth to that position.

Bernie Walter is a man of many words

I had only intended to spend about thirty minutes in the baseball offices. The plan was to meet with coach Erik Bakich and Walter, the new director of operations, face to face for the first time and formally introduce myself.

Walter greeted me in a short-sleeve dress shirt with a tacky, yet classic tie with the words “Terps” and “Testudo” emblazoned all over it. When I left, it was nearly 90 minutes later and for the majority of the time, we hadn’t even spoke about his new job or the state of the program.

Of course we did cover his new responsibilities and his hopes for the team in both the short term and the long term. But we also covered his job as a sexual education teacher for over two decades, his Man-Cave devoted to the Terps, and his experiences coaching players such as John Smoltz and Mike Mussina.

So follow me, if you dare, as I go deeper down the Walter rabbit hole.

Mychal Parker Commits…

By now you probably already know the news. Class of 2010 forward Mychal Parker has committed to the Terps.

That’s the third member of the 2010 recruiting class so far, a class that on paper is shaping up to be Gary Williams’ best recruiting haul in quite some time.

Of course, the key phrase in that statement is “on paper.” All you have to do is check out how that 2002 class turned out (McCray flunked out, Gilchrist bashed heads with Williams and left early and Garrison underperformed) to understand how in a lot of instances, internet recruiting rankings don’t mean Sweet 16 trips.

Nonetheless, the 6-foot-6 Parker is a get. The Washington, N.C., native is ranked as the No. 48 overall prospect by Scout, and No. 70 by Rivals. Add him to a group that includes highly-regarded guards Terrence Ross and Terrell Stoglin, and Williams might have found needed replacements for seniors Greivis Vasquez, Eric Hayes and Landon Milbourne.

Plus, getting Parker over Virginia, the other school most rumored to be chasing his services this summer, and a program progressing under the new leadership of coach Tony Bennett, is a powerful recruiting statement.

In about four years we’ll see if this recruiting statement actually resulted in more success on the court and not just a pretty big day on the Terps’ blogosphere and message boards.
