Terps Must Make Fewer Mistakes

Minimizing mistakes has been a major talking point for coach Ralph Friedgen and his players the past two weeks. There’s been a lot to talk about.

At the forefront of the issue are the turnovers. Oh, the turnovers. The Terps have given the ball away nine times in their last two games. It’s an alarming stat. So much so, that Friedgen said Tuesday that he was amazed his team hadn’t lost by 50 points.

In he video below, the Terps address why these mistakes are being made, and what is being done to curtail the errors.

Volume is a little soft. Adjust accordingly.

As my colleague Adi Joseph pointed out yesterday, the ACC has been doing its best Jekyl and Hyde impression so far this season.

The conference has been toiling in the land of mediocrity over the past few seasons while the SEC and Big 12 roll on past.

But in some ways, that makes the conference so fun. While most of the other conferences have clear front-runners and cellar dwellars, the ACC is a toss-up.

So what do we know?

We know that Virginia Tech is good, and that Maryland, Duke, and Virginia are not. But there are eight other teams sandwiched in between, all with conference title aspirations.

The best part is, that for the most part, the non-conference schedule is over. With the exception of Miami and Georgia Tech, everyone else will be playing a ACC opponent.

Hopefully that will make our job a little easier.

Ralph Friedgen Has Been a Bad Boy

Ralph Friedgen looked up to the sky and rolled his eyes. “I’m wondering what I did wrong,” he said simultaneously to reporters and some higher power.

The Terrapin football team has only caused three turnovers in four games. Fridge was bemoaning what he perceived to be a lack of good fortune. Is this the lord’s punishment?

Suppose, as Fridge concluded, that he hasn’t been a good boy. What does this mean for Terps fans? Well, a new offensive line may not be arriving for Christmas. Otherwise, I have no idea.

More Unbridled Optimism on a Tuesday

Judging by the reaction I have seen and heard inside Byrd Stadium, around campus and on online message boards this week, I think it is safe to say a lot of people have lost hope for this Terrapin football season.

The Terps are 1-3, they have lost two consecutive home games against less-than-stellar programs, and they need to go 5-3 against a decently tough ACC schedule just to qualify for a bowl game.

But somehow, the Terps remain optimistic.

I wouldn’t expect to hear players and coaches on any team say they are giving up after four weeks, their team is not very good, and there is no chance they will turn it around.

But the Terps seem to have no problem taking the positive-thinking approach a step further and throwing out some very lofty goals they still hope to achieve.

So for those of you who have not yet jumped off the bandwagon, and like Alex Wujciak cling to dreams of playing in January at the Orange Bowl, here is a compilation of some inspirational quotes fired off by the Terps this afternoon at their weekly press luncheon.

Linebackers stepping up

In a fourth-and-goal situation from the Terp football team’s 1-yard line Saturday, Rutgers decided to go conventional and run the ball up the gut with starting running back Jourdan Brooks.

This was supposed to be a porous Terp defense, after all, one that had allowed at least 32 points in every game so far.

But linebackers Alex Wujciak and Adrian Moten busted through the Scarlet Knight offensive line and took down Brooks behind the line for a loss of one and a crucial turnover — or at least, what at the time was a crucial turnover.

The big-time play kept the Terps ahead by three in the third quarter Saturday. In the aftermath of the 34-13 loss, in which Rutgers reeled off 24 unanswered points, the goal line stand seems trivial. But it serves as a reminder of the kind of potential the Terp linebacking corps has.

If it’s broke, you gotta fix it…fast

You’re getting tired of hearing about the Terps youth.

Coach Ralph Friedgen knows this, but he doesn’t have any better answers at this point.

After 10 more costly penalties and five game-changing turnovers against Rutgers, Friedgen was again perplexed Saturday evening.

The ninth-year coach indicated he might have to “go live” to simulate game conditions to cut down on the fumbles and penalties with more realistic repetitions.

“If we were a good team right now, we wouldn’t win [because of those mistakes],” Friedgen said.

The players see it, too. The Terps’ atrocious -10 turnover margin makes both the offense and defense look bad. They’d love nothing more than to put this early season story line behind them.

But until then, they’ve got to keep searching for their own answers.

“It’s definitely frustrating because it’s stuff that we work on every day in practice,” wide receiver Torrey Smith said. “We work harder than I believe, I’m not scared to say it, than any team in the country. It’s just frustrating when everything is stuff we’ve seen before and we were really prepared for, and it’s just mental mistakes that kill you.”

The Terps’ ACC slate starts Saturday against Clemson. It’s time to grow up fast or come up with a better explanation for these inexcusable mistakes.

UPDATED: Jordan Williams arrested

Terp men’s basketball freshman center Jordan Williams was arrested last month in his hometown of Torrington, Conn., on breach of peace and assault charges.

Saturday, he turned himself in, was released and is awaiting a court date on Oct. 5 in Connecticut.

Details of the arrests – there were four others who were arrested in connection with the incident – have not been disclosed because the warrant was sealed, according to The Register Citizen News.

The alleged incident occured on Aug. 8.

Williams, a 6-foot-10 frontcourt player and the No. 85-ranked recruit in the nation by Rivals.com, has a chance to contribute right away to the Terps, who lost forward Dave Neal to graduation after last season.

UPDATE: Coach Gary Williams made a prepared statement through the Athletics Department this afternoon regarding the Williams arrest:

“We are aware of the situation and are monitoring any changes. We will let the judicial system run its course before making any decisions. Any discipline coming from the campus will be in accordance with our Student-Athlete Code of Conduct.”

The ACC mess

“If we go undefeated in the ACC, we go to the Orange Bowl.”

Linebacker Alex Wujciak is correct in his bold statement. The Terps are not yet out of contention for the ACC championship — heck, they’re not yet out of contention for a perfect ACC season.

At this point, the assessment is clearly far-fetched. The Terps (1-3)have yet to win a game against any FBS (formerly D1-A) opponent. But then again, the way things have looked so far, we’re clearly in for another wildly unpredictable year in ACC football.

Ralph: Baltz Out at Least Two Weeks; Pinegar Has “A Bruise on His Butt”

Terrapin football coach Ralph Friedgen discussed some injury news in the wake of yesterday’s 34-13 loss against Rutgers on his weekly teleconference with reporters this afternoon.

Punter Travis Baltz and right tackle Paul Pinegar were the two key guys who got hurt.
