Bye-Bye Boomer

If you flipped on the NFL Today pregame show on CBS this morning, you saw the No. 3 most prolific passer in Terrapin football history seated in the chair that used to be occupied by the Terp QB with the second most passing yards in school history.

That’s because senior Terp quarterback Chris Turner passed  former Terp and NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Boomer Esiason on the program’s all-time yardage list against Duke on Saturday.

Turner passed Esiason on his 67-yard touchdown pass to running back Davin Meggett in the third quarter of the Terps’ 17-13 loss at Wallace Wade Stadium.

After the sloppy loss, I was curious what Turner thought of his climb toward the top of the list, especially passing someone as high-profile as Boomer.

Detweiler’s Deductions: Duke Edition

If you didn’t tune into the ESPN360 feed of today’s Terrapin football game against Duke, you didn’t miss any major revelations.

By this point in the season, we know what the Terps bring to the table. Even with a variety of factors working in their favor, including an off-and-on rain that at times inhibited the Blue Devils’ powerful passing attack, it wasn’t enough to net the Terps their second conference win.

Once again, too many mistakes and an anemic offense doomed the Terps, this time resulting in a disappointing 17-13 loss.

Here’s what else you can take from the Terps’ sixth loss of the season:

1. The Terps tried to use their physical advantages and it ultimately cost them. - The rain had a big factor in the Terps’ abandoning the passing game, but there came a certain point when enough was enough. Pounding diminuitive Caleb Porzel through the rain and mud just wasn’t working. Offensive coordinator James Franklin needed to let his senior quarterback Chris Turner try to make plays with his arm. Sticking him in third down situations because of two poor running plays time and again was a lot to ask. Or how about the call of a quarterback draw on 3rd and 3 midway through the fourth quarter? The Terps definitely had a physical advantage in theory against the Blue Devils, but with the sloppy mess at Wallace Wade Stadium, it just wasn’t working out. “I thought we’d get more out of Porzel. I don’t know if the field was a problem for him or what. I thought he’d give us something, and he really didn’t. We’ve got to make more plays in the throwing game, too.” If Thaddeus Lewis could pass through the rain, why not give Turner a chance to make a few plays down field and do the same?

Final: Duke 17-Terps 13

DURHAM, N.C.–Chris Turner’s interception and Tony Logan’s muffed punt return cost the Terps any chance they might have had at a late comeback.

The Terps fall to 2-6 on the year, their worst eight-game start since 1998.

If it’s even worth mentioning at this point, they need to win their remaining four games to qualify for a bowl game.

We’ll have more later.

Freshmen impress in basketball intra-squad scrimmage

I’m not going to put too much on here, because there will be a full article in Monday’s Diamondback, but in the first game like action for James Padgett and Jordan Williams, the duo looked good.

End of Third Quarter: Duke 17 Terps 13

DURHAM, N.C.– A quarter that started very slowly saw some excitement toward the end and we might actually have a watchable football game on our hands.

Duke had another long drive down the field that led to the first score of the half.

Thad Lewis hit Connor Vernon with a pass over Cam Chism deep down the left sideline. Vernon was originally ruled out of bounds at the Terps’ 6 yardline but after a lengthy review he was ruled out at the 1.

Three plays later, tight end Danny Parker made a nice one-handed catch on a play-action pass from Lewis for a 2-yard touchdown that made it 17-6 with 5:35 to play in the quarter.

The Terps responded about a minute later with a 67-yard touchdown on a screen pass from Chris Turner to Davin Meggett.

The screen, called on 3rd and 18, was executed perfectly and it really just came out of nowhere.

The Terps’ first touchdown in two weeks made it 17-13.

We’ll have more after the game.

Halftime: Duke 10 Terps 6

DURHAM, N.C.– The Terp defense forced two turnovers in a span of three Duke offensive plays during the second quarter, but the Terps managed to score just a field goal.

Jamari McCollough recovered a fumble forced by Alex Wujciak, and Cameron Chism intercepted a Thad Lewis pass.

Chism’s pick gave the Terps the ball at the Blue Devils’ 31 yardline, but the Terp offense only gained eight yards on the ensuing drive and Nick Ferrara kicked a 40-yard field goal that made it 7-6 Duke with 8:34 left in the half.

Will Snyderwine kicked a 35-yard field goal for Duke with 3:31 left to make it 10-6.

As the score and the description of the turnovers might indicate, the Terp defense is playing very well but the Terp offense is really struggling to move the ball.

The Terps haven’t scored a touchdown in six full quarters now.

Chris Turner has taken all the snaps so far, but he hasn’t really been able to get in a rhythm in the rainy conditions.

Freshman Caleb Porzel was the Terps’ featured running back for most of the half, and he’s had mixed results. The diminutive back has been able to make people miss, but he often gets stacked up at the line more often than you would like to see.

At least the Terps haven’t turned the ball over yet.

The Terps are certainly still in this game, and will get the ball to start the second half, but it’s mostly been another performance worthy of ESPN360 so far.

UPDATE: A Terp spokesman said safety Antwine Perez is “OK.” The junior was taken off the field on a stretcher with an apparent head or neck injury after making a tackle late in the first quarter.

End of First Quarter: Duke 7 Terps 3

DURHAM, N.C.– It’s pouring again at Wallace Wade Stadium as the Terps and Blue Devils finish up a relatively nondescript quarter.

After a Duke three-and-out and a Terp turnover on downs, Duke quarterback Thad Lewis found receiver Donovan Varner for a 24-yard touchdown pass to cap a long drive that opened the scoring.

The Blue Devils converted three third downs on the 9-play, 69-yard drive, as the Terps struggled to put pressure on Lewis yet still left big holes in coverage.

The Terps responded with a promising drive  that stalled at Duke’s 7 yardline and ended with Nick Ferrara kicking a 25-yard field goal.

The Terps had first and goal at the 9 when they had Torrey Smith take a direct snap with Chris Turner lined up out wide. Smith ran right and lost a yard.

Caleb Porzel played the entire first drive at running back, and Davin Meggett played most snaps at running back on the second drive.

Paul Pinegar is playing left guard, the third offensive line position he has played this season. Justin Lewis started at right guard and R.J. Dill is the starting right tackle.

Terp safety Antwine Perez just got injured making a tackle in the last minute of the quarter. Both teams’ medical staffs worked on Perez and he was taken off the field on a stretcher.

Field hockey up 2-0 against North Carolina at halftime

The Terps are ahead 2-0 against the Tar Heels after a tight first half.

North Carolina held momentum through the first 25 minutes, thriving on the energy from their five seniors on their Senior Day and picking off pass after pass from the Terps to disrupt their attack.

But their first penalty corner turned the game around with nine minutes left in the half. Emma Thomas rocketed a shot into the cage, and the Terps controlled the half from that point on. The Terps’ second goal came a minute after their first, this time on an assist from forward Katie O’Donnell up to forward Nicole Muracco.

Now as the rain pours down, the rivals are starting the second half and the Terps will try to secure a victory and the top seed in the ACC Tournament.

Durham: Where Great Things Happen!

While the Terp basketball team’s schedule annually features a trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium down here in Durham, the Terp football team hasn’t played the Blue Devils since 2004.

The Terps won big that day at Wallace Wade Stadium. The ACC expanded to become a 12-team conference and the teams haven’t met since.

That means the only Terp player to play Duke is 6th-year cornerback Richard Taylor.

But that doesn’t mean a trip to Durham is anything special for these guys. Most of them have been to the triangle region before as trips to North Carolina and N.C. State marked the team’s 2007 schedule. They’ll be back in the area on Nov. 7 for their date with the Wolfpack at nearby Carter-Finley Stadium.

Also, in case you forget, Duke has been so bad for so long, this hasn’t been a match-up anyone has been clamoring to see.
