Unofficial Word: Turner Will Start

A colleague in the press box told us Chris Turner will start today’s season finale against Boston College.

Turner suffered a sprained MCL three weeks ago at N.C. State, and was listed as probable on the weekly injury report the Terps released Thursday.

Jamarr Robinson was also listed as probable with an unspecified leg injury, and had been seen on campus this week wearing a walking boot.

Both Turner and Robinson are participating in pregame warmups, so both are apparently available to play.

Safety Kenny Tate, who was listed as doubtful Thursday with a high ankle sprain suffered two weeks ago against Virginia Tech, is not in uniform and will not play.

In other developments, it’s only about a half hour before kickoff and there are maybe 5,000 people in the stands according to a very rough estimate.

You could head down the stadium now and have about 20 rows to yourself in nearly any section.

“Hello Everyone” From Byrd Stadium

Hello everyone.

It’s about an hour before kickoff of the Terrapin football team’s game against Boston College and about 4.5 hours before the merciful end of an absolutely horrible season.

The Terps are hoping to avoid their first double-digit loss season in school history, and if you believe the speculation, they could be playing for coach Ralph Friedgen for the last time.

The buzz on campus is nonexistent.

There’s hardly anybody in College Park, relatively speaking, with students apparently mostly still at home for Thanksgiving break. The tailgating scene in the usual parking lots are much smaller than what we’ve become accustomed to seeing on our way to the stadium.

Inside Byrd, the Terps are wearing their black jerseys with red pants, the same outlandish combination they wore during their most recent win Oct. 3 against Clemson.

Both Chris Turner and Jamarr Robinson are dressed and warming up, but no word yet on which quarterback will get the start.

The official pregame depth chart lists Chris Turner OR Jamarr Robinson at QB, so apparently it’s going to be a gametime decision.

No sign of safety Kenny Tate yet, who was listed as doubtful on Thursday’s injury report. Everybody else on that list is definitely out.

We’ll be back with more personnel information, probably on the quarterback situation, when it becomes available.

Wrestling readies for big weekend

There will be no edition of The Diamondback this Friday due to turkey-related festivities but that has not stopped winter athletic programs in College Park from continuing their season. And it certainly won’t stop me from bringing devoted wrestling followers a weekend preview.

The excitement from upsetting Cornell last week and ascending into most publications’ Top 5 is beginning to wear off. And for coach Kerry McCoy, that is probably a good thing because the schedule doesn’t get any easier.

The No. 5 Terps (3-0) are heading to Troy, N.Y. this weekend for the Northeast Duals and what looks to be three more difficult matches.

The team will face Northern Colorado first at 9:15 a.m, and will end against No. 13 Lehigh at 3:15 p.m., with a match against No. 11 Central Michigan sandwiched in between.

For a breakdown of each match follow me past the jump.

Ranking the Maui Performances

Kahului, Hawaii- In my last moments here in Hawaii, I could go into detail about running into golfer Phil Mickelson buying doughnuts in a Maui grocery store this Thanksgiving morning.

Or I could talk about my journalist-to tourist-to journalist switcharoo yesterday that allowed me to get my beach time and see both basketball games that I needed to see at the Lahaina Civic Center yesterday.

But I think it’s more useful to everybody if I use the knowledge gleaned from three days of watching as much basketball as possible with an island paradise right outside the door.

In all, I saw in person at least some of all 12 games in the tournament except for Vanderbilt’s early morning win against Chaminade on Tuesday, including Gonzaga’s 61-59 overtime win in the championship game Wednesday evening.

So, in order to properly place how much of a disaster this trip may or may not have been for the Terps, who left the island today without beating a Division I opponent this Thanksgiving week, I thought it might be good to look at who gained the most from their Maui Invitational trip. (Hint: If you don’t care about any team but the Terps, you can skip straight to the bottom of the list.)

End of First Half, Wisconsin 37, Terps 27

Lahaina, Hawaii- The Terps got the start they wanted, hitting their first four shots to take a quick lead.

Then they started being plagued by some of the same problems that set them back in yesterday’s loss to Cincinnati, and the Badgers, who finished the half shooting 51 percent, got hot.

The Terps missed free throws, failed to create transition offense with their press and struggled to rebound.

The Badgers are winning the rebounding battle, 17-9. They’ve hit seven three-pointers, including three by Trevon Hughes. Even with 10 turnovers, they are rolling right now after taking the Terps best shot early.

An NBA scout just turned to me and said, “The Terps may be practicing tonight at midnight if they lose this one.”

That sounds about right.

Volleyball holds on, ends season on a positive note

In the third and final set of today’s matchup against Boston College, the Terrapin volleyball team trailed 20-17. The Eagles were on a roll, and the Terps looked disorganized and flustered. Coach Tim Horsmon knew he needed to calm his team down, so he called a timeout.

Immediately following the one minute pause from game action, the Terps went on a six-point run to go ahead 23-20. Led by Kara Bates, who was responsible for three of those six points, the team went on to win the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.

Bates was a force to be reckoned with today, as she recorded 16 kills and two blocks en route to a .433 hitting percentage. Following her lead, Remy McBain had nine kills and one block, while Lisa Scott recorded four kills and six blocks.

For the Terps (14-19, 6-14 ACC), this match marks the end of their 2009 season. It was also the last match for the senior class of Hayley Hanson (one kill, one service ace), Christina Paul (two assists, seven digs) and Katie Usher (five kills, two blocks).

Wisconsin Pregame

Lahaina, Hawaii- The Terps are getting ready for the game that will pretty much make-or-break their Maui experience.

The Terps came into this Thanksgiving week with designs on winning their first Wayne Duke Championship Trophy.

Now, they’re just hoping to avoid leaving the island with two losses after this game against Wisconsin.

The Badgers are tough and disciplined, like their coach Bo Ryan.

They don’t turn the ball over a lot and are holding opponents to 36 percent shooting in four games this season. On Monday, they were able to corrall uber-athletic Arizona in a 65-61 win. Last night, they couldn’t mount a serious threat at Gonzaga, who racked up 74 points. They’ve also got some size that will test the Terps for the second straight game. Luckily for the Terps’ youngsters inside, they don’t have to worry about Yancy Gates today.

Greivis Gets it Going…Kinda

Even in a loss, Vasquez finally found his rainbow in this island paradise.

Even in a loss, Vasquez finally found his rainbow in this island paradise.

Lahaina, Hawaii- You knew that Terp Greivis Vasquez would eventually bust out of his season-long slump that included single digit scoring in the team’s first four games.

While the preseason All-ACC pick found scoring difficult against Charleston Southern, Fairfield, New Hampshire and Chaminade, he finally found his scoring touch in Tuesday’s loss to Cincinnati.

Vasquez finished with a game-high 19 points, five rebounds and three assists. As his team failed to get much going offensively, Vasquez really forced the issue for the first time this year, getting to the foul line 12 times. (He did miss three times from the charity stripe, including an uncharacteristic second half trip in which he missed both shots.)

In a game in which it was tough to like much that the Terps did, Vasquez’s more-or-less return to form was a small bright spot.

“There’s been a lot written, a lot said and sometimes that pressure you have to work your way through it,” coach Gary Williams said. “And hopefully, he’s okay now.”

Taylor garners ACC Wrestler honors

Terp star Hudson Taylor has won yet another ACC award and is now just four pins away from the school record. Jaclyn Borowski - The Diamondback

Terp star Hudson Taylor has won yet another ACC award and is now just four pins away from the school record. Jaclyn Borowski - The Diamondback

On the heels of the Terrapin Wrestling team’s upset victory over Cornell that announced their entrance to the nation’s Top 5, senior star Hudson Taylor was awarded ACC wrestler of the week, as if there was any doubt.

While the pride of winning such an award may have worn off because this is not the first time Taylor has been honored by the conference. In addition to winning ACC wrestler of the year two years straight, he most recently won the weekly award last February.

Still, what he accomplished this past weekend was more than impressive.

For those who don’t feel like reading the press release allow me to summarize for you how his weekend unfolded.
