Baseball picked to finish last in the Atlantic Division

Despite a 27-27 record and fourth place finish last season, and new coach Erik Bakich’s proclamation that the Terps were going “sneak up on teams” this season, Rivals still picked the Terps to finish last in the Atlantic Division.

Kendall Rogers, who is essentially the website’s only college baseball writer, clearly has a lot of respect for Bakich’s ability as a coach, but he was not-so-high on the first year coach’s chances for success in 2010. The Terps lost three of their top four hitters but return most of their pitching staff and have added one or two newcomers who could make an impact.

The review is far from glowing.

Halftime: Clemson 29, Terps 22

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Terps finally fell back to the planet in today’s first half at Littlejohn Coliseum.

After an incredible shooting run to begin ACC play, the Terps struggled throughout the first 20 minutes against the Tigers.

They shot 37 percent in the half, but with just three offensive rebounds and an offense intent on forcing the issue against the Clemson press, they were no where near as effective as they have been. Greivis Vasquez picked up two fouls in the first three minutes and finished the half with just two points in 10 minutes. They have 12 turnovers.

It was the Terps’ lowest first half output since scoring just 18 points in a loss to Cincinnati back in November’s Maui Invitational.

Ailing Tigers vs. Surging Terps

It's a perfectly nice day in South Carolina. No snow in sight.

CLEMSON, S.C. – The title of this post for all intents and purposes captures tonight’s match-up in four words.

The visitors have won six of seven, while playing their best basketball of the season. That high level of play hasn’t waned in their three road games during that stretch. They just hope they can keep it going.

For a full run down of the Clemson men’s basketball team’s various ailments, The Greenville News’ Scott Keepfer has the doctor’s report, or as close as we’re going to get before the scheduled 5:30 tip. But basically, point guard Demontez Stitt remains doubtful with a sprained foot and the Booker brothers, Trevor and Devin, are bothered by the flu and a broken nose, respectively.

Tiger coach Oliver Purnell, whose team is mired in a three-game conference losing streak, has called it the most important game of the season. Not being at 100 percent doesn’t help his team’s cause.

Defending Booker

If the ACC seems like a gauntlet of teams armed with quality big men, you might be a Terp fan.

In the first five ACC games, the guard-oriented Terps have faced some of the conference’s most talented front courts.

With a freshman starting center, going up against the likes of Florida State’s Solomon Alabi, Wake Forest’s Al-Farouq Aminu, N.C. State’s Tracy Smith and Miami’s Dwayne Collins could’ve caused the Terps extreme problems.

So far, it really hasn’t.

Utilizing an effective strategy that usually ensures a guard, often Greivis Vasquez, is ready to double-down when the star big man receives the ball, the Terps have more than held their own.

That was particularly evident in recent blowout wins against N.C. State and Miami. The strategy sufficiently rattled the Wolfpack offense. They often settled for jump shots instead of establishing Smith inside. The 6-foot-8 forward finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but many of those came on putbacks.

Collins fared even more poorly against Jordan Williams and Co. The Hurricanes’ leading scorer finished with five points and three turnovers in 24 minutes.

Mitch Kallick, a 2002 graduate of New York University, was hired, yesterday, as the new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator of the Terrapin volleyball team.

Kallick comes to the Terps after two seasons as an assistant coach at Cal-Fullerton.

“We are excited to have Mitch on board and think he will be both a great recruiter and trainer,” coach Tim Horsmon said in a press release. “He is energetic, passionate and will work hard to continue to move our program forward. I have known Mitch for a number of years and he has always impressed me with work ethic and I believe he will be a great fit and balance for our program. Our players will learn a lot from him in the gym and will like who he is on and off of the court.”

Wrestling prepares for George Mason

It’s hard to believe, but the Terrapin Wrestling team is entering the final stretch of their 2009-2010 regular season. With a grueling December over and done with, and a comfortable 3-0 start in the ACC, the Terps have just five matches left in the season starting with tonight’s showdown with George Mason.

The Terps really only have one road match left, the season finale in Charlottesville, and tonight’s match in Fairfax, Va. should result in victory.

The Patriots (3-7) have lost three straight and five of their last six entering Friday’s match, including a 24-11 defeat at the hands of Drexel, a team the Terps demolished in November. Meanwhile, the Terps (15-4) are coming off a weekend in which they loss to unranked Navy and dominanted in a dual meet sweep of North Carolina State and Duke the following day.

Darko pursues rap career

Darko, in studio. Photo courtesy of Kwame Darko.

College athletics is a year-round process. It takes up a lot of time.

Over his five-year career with the Terps’ men’s soccer team, Kwame Darko didn’t have many opportunities to explore his lyrical abilities.

So Darko, who started 12 games in 2009 and served as a valuable fill-in for left back Rodney Wallace in 2008, found time for his music whenever he could – at parties, in the spring offseason or on the team bus during road trips.

According to Darko, coach Sasho Cirovski would make him get up and start rapping for the team. Sasho’s a fan.

Now, with his career over, Darko is trying to find a job. He’s hoping to catch on with a team in the USL or overseas, but in the meantime, he’s found some time to get in a recording studio and put together a mixtape.

“Tangerine Tinted Sunglasses,” Darko’s 18-track mixtape will be released Saturday and available online, at Myspace and Facebook and other file-sharing sites. There will also be a release party Saturday, at the Ozio Restaurant & Lounge in Washington.

More from Darko after the jump:

Former Basketball Coach Millikan Dies

Former Terp basketball coach Bud Millikan has died, current Terp coach Gary Williams, who played for Millikan at this university, confirmed in a press release today.

Millikan coached the Terps from 1950-1967, totaling a 243-182 record. His best season was 1957-58 when the Terps went 22-7 and reached the NCAA Elite Eight after winning the ACC title.

Millikan learned the game playing for Hall of Fame coach Henry Iba. And Williams has talked extensively about his biggest basketball influences- Millikan and longtime Iowa coach Dr. Tom Davis.

After a Maui Invitational loss to Wisconsin in November, Williams talked about the evolution of his defensive philosophy. Millikan taught exclusively man-to-man defense, and Williams picked up his zone influences from Davis.

Several other former Terps who played under Millikan went onto achieve coaching success, including Terp assistant Joe Harrington and former Towson coach Terry Truax.

“To have that many coaches come off one team shows that if you listened, you picked up a lot of good things,” Williams said in the release. “He was a tough coach and if you wanted to play, you did things his way. He was a great person.”

Information regarding memorial services was not available in the release.

Earning Garbage Time

One of the most interesting things about the Terps’ third straight double-digit conference win yesterday- an 81-59 drubbing of Miami- was the Terps acted like a team that had been there before.

I’ll have a little more on that in Friday’s print edition preview for the Clemson game on Sunday, but the Terps were very careful not to provide too much bulletin board material for the rest of the conference they currently lead.

Most of the Terps who were available to the media afterward (Vasquez, Mosley, Milbourne, Hayes) were more interested in looking ahead to 11 more conference games than offering reaction to their incredible success in the last few weeks.

The title of this post is a reference to that point. In a league in which many games have been decided in the last two minutes, the Terps have put together three consecutive conference games in which they could take a breath and rather enjoy the last few minutes of an assured win.

After first-year walk-on Ersin Levent checked into the game for Landon Milbourne with 2:09 remaining Tuesday, all five Terp starters were watching from the bench.
