Florida State’s coach endorses Terps’ tourney bid

It’s not often that the coach of a team that’s just walloped its host by 30-plus points backs that same opposing team’s NCAA Tournament credentials.

But No. 9 Florida State coach Sue Semrau, coming off a 94-61 blowout win Sunday over Maryland, did just that in her postgame press conference. Semrau, who serves on the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s Board of Directors, said she “absolutely” considers the Terps a tournament-worthy team.

“You look at what they’ve been able to do against their competition and again, I think going into the ACC Tournament, they’ll be really tough to handle,” Semrau said. “I sure can’t pronounce No. 24’s name [Diandra Tchatchouang], but… she’s quite a player. She’s really growing into the system.”

Tchatchouang, along with center Lynetta Kizer (17 points), was a rare bright spot for the Terps inside Comcast Center. She had 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting, five rebounds and two blocks against the Seminoles, all game-highs.

In all, underclassmen accounted for 92 and 96 percent of the Terps’ scoring and rebounding, respectively, in their regular-season finale Sunday.

“I really have to compliment Maryland,” Semrau said. “I think that they’ve come a long way with freshmen and sophomores. They’re going to be a really great team.”

Terps crush Duke in women’s lax

DURHAM, N.C. – Sorry I have been so late to the game here but if you didn’t hear, the Terrapin women’s lacrosse team dismantled No. 5 Duke today down in Durham to the tune of 17-4.

From the opening draw, the No. 2 Terps (3-0) attacked the Duke defense relentlessly and erased any doubts from their slow start at Penn State last weekend.

Goals came in rapid succession after Sarah Mollison at attack notched the first of three goals on the afternoon only 1:22 into the match. The Terps rallied off four straight goals before Duke responded with one in with a little less than 11 minutes remaining in the half. It would be the last Duke goal in the first half, as the Terps enjoyed a 9-1 advantage at the break.

Men’s lacrosse pulls off its own crazy win at Georgetown

When I left the Georgetown campus this afternoon, I thought the men’s lacrosse team would have the craziest Terps’ win of the day. After watching the men’s basketball team’s double-overtime, 104-100 thriller, I can no longer claim that, but suffice it to say that between the two sports, Terp fans had about as much excitement as they can handle.

Before Terp basketball took the floor at Cassell Coliseum, the lacrosse team faced the Hoyas at 2 p.m. at their Multi-Sport Field in Washington. Though the field had been friendly to the Terps in the past — they had won all three of their past games there – through the first 37 minutes today, it did not look like the streak would hold up.

But facing a four-goal deficit, the No. 6 Terps (2-0) caught fire late in the third period. Led by three scores by Will Yeatman, they went on a seven-goal tear that pushed them to a 15-13 comeback victory over No. 12 Georgetown. (more…)

Halftime: Virginia Tech 37, Terps 31

BLACKSBURG, Va.–  After waiting an extra three hours to play, the Terps trail at the half for the third time in four games.

A rugged 10-point, six-rebound, two-block first half from Jeff Allen and a hot-shooting start by Dorenzo Hudson ensured the Hokies’ lead.

After a back-and-forth first 16 minutes, Virginia Tech, who has yet to lose at Cassell Coliseum this season, asserted control.

The Terps had just one field goal in the final four minutes of the half. Virginia Tech benefitted from 14 second chance points, led by Allen. It’s been physical and chippy almost throughout and at certain points in the first half, coach Gary Williams clearly wasn’t thrilled with the officials.

Vasquez leads the Terps with eight points and five rebounds. He’s been booed every time he touches the ball. Sean Mosley scored seven of the Terps’ first 15 points but after briefly leaving the game with an apparent neck injury he didn’t score the rest of the half.

For most of the afternoon the major story line was whether this game would even happen. At this point, it’s whether the Terps can continue to win games with big second half efforts.

Virginia Tech Pregame

BLACKSBURG, Va.– So, this thing is really going to happen.

Three hours after the originally schedule start time it seems we are about an hour away from having basketball at Cassell Coliseum.

The P.A. announcer periodically reminds fans of the three water main breaks that have robbed the arena of water services. Fans will be allowed to leave the building to use the restrooms.

It’s just the latest in what has been a pretty screwy season for the Terps schedule-wise. They started the ACC season by playing two games in three days and a snow out a few weeks ago forced the Terps to play three games in five days at one point earlier this month. This situation is clearly a little different, but we’ll see what coach Gary Williams has to say about this. (But here’s betting he says something about not using it as an excuse.)

But, on to the game.

Preview: Terps basketball at Virginia Tech

The Terrapins men’s basketball team could use another win against an RPI Top-50 foe. Virginia Tech could use a win to move off the tournament bubble. One team will walk away unsatisfied.

But no one will walk away unsatisfied (segue alert!) from this rousing edition of In Other Words. The Diamondback’s Terrapin basketball gang takes one more look back at Wednesday’s Clemson win, then a look ahead to Saturday’s bout with the Hokies. Do have a look, yourself.

As you can clearly see, we’re continuing to revamp the format along with adding some bells and whistles. Pretty please, tell us what you think in the comments.

Blacksburg Blues

Strange but true fact: The Terrapin men’s basketball team hasn’t won at Cassell Coliseum in more than 19 years.

Granted for a good portion of that time Virginia Tech was a member of the Big East and the Terps’ losing streak in Blacksburg, Va., is only three games.

But the Hokies are a tough out on their home floor.

They are 14-0 at home this season, joining Duke as the only ACC squads without a home blemish.

The Terps, though, have won six of their last seven games, including two on the road. Their lone loss in that span was a 21-point loss at the Cameron Indoor Stadium.

In a conference in which eight teams have two or fewer home losses, that’s something to feel good about.

“It’s a home court year in the ACC, but we’ve won [three] on the road,” coach Gary Williams said. “We know what you have to do because we’ve done it.”

Baseball: Kolarek pulls double duty

In case you missed it, here is a quick rundown of every role Terrapin baseball player Adam Kolarek played in the team’s opening series sweep at the hands of FIU.

In his first ever collegiate series as a position player, Kolarek hit fifth in all three games, finishing 2-for-11 with three strikeouts. In his first ever series fielding a position that isn’t raised 6′6” inches off the ground, Kolarek played 18 innings at first base and four innings in left field, recording 14 putouts and no errors.

And, in his third season as a versatile pitcher for the Terps, Kolarek threw three scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks on Sunday to keep the Terps close during the middle innings.

That’s downright exhausting.

Clemson Pregame

The purple seats at Littlejohn Coliseum were not kind to the Terps on Jan. 31.

One of the first things coach Gary Williams said after his team fell to the then-No. 21 Tigers 62-53 was that he couldn’t remember forcing 21 turnovers and holding an opponent to less than 32 percent shooting and losing.

But that happens when your team turns the ball over 26 times and shoots 2-for-10 from 3-point range. In other words, it was a pretty ugly game all around.

Tonight, the Terps (19-7, 9-3 ACC) have a chance to get a little bit of revenge. (Even if no one came close to using that word during yesterday’s media availaility session.)

In a match-up of two teams that have won three straight in conference, the Tigers (19-7, 7-5 ACC) are at Comcast Center for a 9 p.m. tip.

One thing to watch is the two biggest stars in this one. Greivis Vasquez and Trevor Booker were both among 30 players named to the Naismith Midseason Watch List today.

In that Jan. 31 meeting, Vasquez had trouble dealing with Tanner Smith’s length and Andre Young’s quickness and ended up finishing with an ACC-season low 10 points and a career-high nine turnovers. Booker shot a season-low 2-for-16, but he got the last laugh sinking a big three-pointer in the closing minutes.

The Terps’ home ACC win streak needed a Cliff Tucker buzzer beater to continue on Saturday. They’ll try to improve to 7-0 tonight and snap a three-game losing streak to the Tigers.

We’re about 20 minutes from game time. The Terps are in their home gold jerseys. Not much else to report.
