WLax: Towson Pregame Notes

For the first time this week, the weather is looking great and just in time for women’s lacrosse battle between the No. 2 Terrapins and No. 7 Towson at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex tonight at 7 p.m.

I focused in my preview on the Terps’ transition from the turf field at the complex to the grass field at Ludwig Field. Tonight’s game is the last played at the complex before it goes through field renovations. But the other big news from the team this week is freshman midfielder Katie Schwarzmann.

Baseball: New offensive strategy has Rodriguez chasing records

As a freshman last season, Terrapin shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez readily admits that he was trying to do everything all at once, resulting in a frustrating first season, especially at the plate.

This season, Rodriguez has simplified his attitude and approach to hitting, and he has become the team’s Mr. Everything and its most exciting offensive player.

At the beginning of last season, former coach Terry Rupp was excited about his team chances to make its first ACC Tournament since the league expanded in 2005.

Part of the reason he was so optimistic was because of the talented crop of incoming freshmen expected to contribute immediately, particularly Rodriguez, who was pencilled in as the starting shortstop from the very first practice.

It became clear by the first weekend of the season that Rodriguez was already above-average defensively. He exhibited good range and a very strong throwing arm that allowed him to make throws across his body and from deep in the hole.

The offensive struggles started immediately, but they were also expected.

Catching up with Byron Mouton

I thought I’d hop on here and provide a little more context on the feature sports story from today’s paper, a “Where are they now?” piece about former Terp basketball player Byron Mouton.

The story will be the kick-off to a small series about former Terp athletes we’re calling “For Love of the Game.”

But I got the idea to focus on Mouton, an integral part of the Terps’ 2002 run to its lone National Championship when I was waiting to interview Greivis Vasquez after practice a month or so back for this piece.

During my wait, I struck up a conversation with university alum Mark Grey, who was waiting for Mouton to finish practicing with the team so they could record a segment for Mouton’s radio show on Grey’s Web site, www.playersvoice.com.

I thought it was interesting that Mouton, who famously toiled in a number of different leagues for a number of different teams in an effort to prolong his pro career, still maintained such a connection to the team.

With the Terps season officially over, I set about tracking down Mouton. On Friday, I attended the Maryland Greenhawks’ game at Coolidge High School in D.C. Two days later, I sat down with him after a tryout at Comcast Center for his AAU program, the 6th Man Warriors.

As I conveyed in the article, Mouton seems to be loving his basketball-filled life right now.

Jamarr Robinson Doesn’t Like Video Games

We’re running the first of what we hope will be a series of stories about the five quarterbacks in Terrapin football spring practice in tomorrow’s print edition, and current starter Jamarr Robinson will be featured first.

I spoke with the sneakily funny Robinson for a while after practice yesterday afternoon, and toward the end of our interview I asked him if there is anything he likes to do away from football.

He took an opposite approach and told me something he doesn’t like to do: Play video games.

Watch this clip from last fall for some perspective before reading what Jamarr had to say.

“I’m a pretty calm, basic person,” Robinson said. “I don’t like to play video games. I’d rather go outside and do something. I’d rather be active than sitting there in front of the TV playing video games. I will go to sleep before I would play a video game.”

A lot of guys on the team like to play video games? I asked.

“They love them. That’s why I spend a lot of time alone. Because everybody is in their room playing video games. I’d rather be active somewhere.”

WLax barely escape James Madison

The No.2 Terrapin women’s lacrosse team barely beat No. 20 James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. Saturday afternoon, winning 8-7.

For the majority of the game, the Dukes held a two- or three-goal lead against the Terps. It wasn’t until midfielder Katie Schwarzmann scored a goal with less than six minutes remaining that the Terps held the lead. The goal proved to be the difference against a pesky and confident James Madison squad.

Taylor is ACC Wrestler of the Year; four others garner All-ACC honors

It was almost a foregone conclusion after his record-setting senior season, but Terrapin 197-pound star Hudson Taylor was named the ACC Wrestler of the Year in a vote amongst the league’s coaches on Friday. Taylor also won the award as a sophomore in 2008.

The choice was really a no-brainer for the league’s six coaches, Taylor was a four-time ACC Wrestler of the Week this season and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the conference tournament earlier in March.

Although his hopes for a national championship were dashed and he admittedly underestimated Cornell’s Cam Simaz, causing him to finish fourth at the NCAA Championships, Taylor still had a fantastic season by all statistical measures.

He finished as the nation’s co-leader in wins with 42 to only four losses, won his second individual ACC title, and became the Terps’ first three-time All-American in school history.

Throughout the season Taylor always spoke of his personal obsession with pins, he was constantly aware of how many pins he had and how many he needed to break school records.

His fascination paid off as he led the nation with 24, which is also the Terps’ record for most pins in a single season. He also broke the school record for most pins in a career and finished with 83 wins coming via fall.

He also leaves the program as the school’s all-time winningest wrestler with a career record of 165-28.

MLax: Terps fall to Tar Heels, 9-7

The Terrapin men’s lacrosse team could not find an answer to the physical North Carolina defense in the second half.

Despite a second quarter comeback to tie the score at halftime, the No. 4 Terps (6-1) were shut out in the third quarter by the No. 4 Tar Heels (9-0), giving their ACC rivals to take a three-goal lead and an insurmountable momentum swing through the end of the game. The 9-7 win puts the Tar Heels at first place in the conference and allows them to continue their undefeated season.

Though North Carolina clearly dominated the second half, many of the statistics seem to tell a different story. The Terps had nine more shots and nine more ground balls than the Tar Heels, and even won one more face off after struggling in the first 30 minutes of the game. But North Carolina’s physical advantage, especially on long pole defense, turned the tide in the contest.

MLax: Terps and Tar Heels tied up at halftime

The No. 4 Tar Heels had taken control of the No. 2  Terps with three straight goals to end the first quarter. And when North Carolina extended that streak  with a goal seven minutes into the second quarter to make the score 4-1, it seemed as if the dominance would continue.

But the Terps finally responded exactly two minutes later. With 6:21 remaining in the first half, Terps’ third-team midfielder Owen Blye served as the unlikely spark for his team, scoring his fist career goal to bring the Terps within two.

That spurred an offensive surge for the Terps, who held possession for much of the rest of the quarter. Miidfielder Adam Sear scored a man-up goal with 3:03 on the clock, putting momentum firmly in the Terps’ corner, and less than a minute after that, attackman Ryan Young put the ball in the cage, putting the Terps on even footing with the Tar Heels at the intermission.

Freshman LB Mackall Impresses Ralph

The Terrapin football team practiced in full pads this morning for the first time this spring, and coach Ralph Friedgen said “It was OK.”

Friedgen said he is still concerned with inconsistency on the offensive line, and that situation was not helped when starting right guard Bennett Fulper left practice because his surgically repaired shoulder “wasn’t feeling right.”

It sounds like Fulper is unofficially listed as day-to-day, and Friedgen said they are going to be cautious with him. Friedgen said he doesn’t think there is anything seriously wrong with Fulper and that the sophomore may just be lacking confidence in his shoulder after his surgery.

Friedgen also confirmed that fullback Taylor Watson does have a torn ACL, and the average recovery time for that injury is about six months.
