Women’s Basketball: Thomas earns seventh ROW

On the same day that Terrell Stoglin earned his second-consecutive ACC Rookie of the Week award for the Terrapin men’s basketball team, forward Alyssa Thomas also earned her second-straight honor.

Only for Thomas, the likely ACC Rookie of the Year, it was her seventh time earning the award on the year. Prior to this season, the program record was five.

Thomas averaged 16 points and eight rebounds in the No. 13 Terps’ wins over Virginia Tech and Boston College last week. She leads all conference freshmen in points, rebounds and steals.

The Terps will be back in action on Friday morning in Greensboro, N.C., where they’ll face the winner of Georgia Tech/Virginia Tech.

Men’s Basketball: Stoglin named ROW

Terrapin men’s basketball guard Terrell Stoglin garnered the conference’s Rookie of the Week honor for the second straight week after averaging 22.5 points per game in two contests last week.

He drained a career high 28 points against North Carolina Sunday night. Against Florida State on Wednesday, Stoglin finished with a team-high 17 points and added four assists. In the two games combined he shot 55.2 percent from the field.

Forward Jordan Williams received the honor twice last season (Feb. 1 and March 1). Along with Williams, Stoglin is the only Terp to garner the honor more than once since Joe Smith received it six different times in 1994.

Stoglin’s 28 points also sets a mark for the current Terp squad. No other player on the roster has ever reached that mark, even Williams.

CAREER HIGH POINTS:

Terrell Stoglin – 28 at North Carolina (2/27/11)
Jordan Williams – 27 (2x) last vs. Wake Forest (2/5/11)
Sean Mosley – 26 vs. Villanova (12/6/09)
Adrian Bowie – 23 at Miami (1/14/09)
Cliff Tucker – 22 vs. North Carolina (2/21/09)

Dino Gregory – 18 vs. N.C. State (2/20/11)
Pe’Shon Howard – 14 (2x) last vs. Boston College (2/12/11)
Haukur Palsson – 13 vs. Longwood (2/9/11)
James Padgett – 10 (3x) last vs. NJIT (12/22/10)

Berend Weijs – 7 vs. UNC Greensboro (12/8/10)
Mychal Parker – 4 vs. UNC Greensboro (12/8/10)
Ersin Levent – 3 vs. Wake Forest (2/5/11)

Men’s Basketball: UNC Frontcourt

After going against one of the biggest teams in the conference, the Terrapin men’s basketball team faces the just as big, if not bigger, North Carolina Tar Heels tonight in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Tar Heels’ starting lineup features Harrison Barnes (6-foot-8), John Henson (6-foot-10) and Tyler Zeller (7-foot-0). The Terps counter with (potentially) Sean Mosley (6-foot-4), Dino Gregory (6-foot-8) and Jordan Williams (6-foot-10). The biggest mismatch falls with Mosley (or Cliff Tucker) guarding one of the nation’s best freshman in Barnes.

North Carolina is averaging a conference-best 42.6 rebounds per game, led by Zeller’s 7.4 per game and Henson’s 9.3 per game. Barnes also grabs 5.3 per game. The Terps have averaged 39.2 rebounds per game this season.

Williams’ ability to box out and grab double digit rebounds will be key tonight, along with Gregory’s ability to stretch the defense with his midrange jumpers and blocking ability.

Columnist Jakob Engelke and I will be checking in throughout the game with updates.

Softball: Terps Beat Pitt, Win Tournament

The Terrapin softball team clinched the Strike Out Cancer Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla., today, beating Pittsburgh 5-4, despite allowing three unearned runs and committing three errors. The offense showed up as well, recording 12 hits.

Coach Laura Watten used all three of her top pitchers in the game, something she suggested she would do if the situation called for it. Kendra Knight got the win for the Terps, starting the game and pitching two innings, allowing two unearned runs and striking out two Panther batters. Kerry Hickey relieved Knight and pitched the middle three innings, allowing two unearned runs. Ashley Czechner pitched the final two innings to earn the save.

Bree Hanafin led the Terps attack, going 3-for-4 with one RBI. Lauren Ghent and Kathy McLaughlin also had multi-hit games, while each scored a run. Marisha Branson, the hero from the first game against Pitt and yesterday’s game against Jacksonville, went 1-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.

After Knight gave up two runs in the top of the first, the Terps got one back in the bottom of the inning before scoring four in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead they would not relinquish. The Panthers chipped away, scoring runs off Hickey in the fourth and fifth innings, but Czechner slammed the door shut in the sixth and seventh.

The win capped a 4-1 weekend for the Terps, improving their record on the year to 6-4.

More to come tomorrow, including reaction from Coach Watten.

Baseball: Terps beat Army 3-1 to complete sweep

The Terrapin baseball team’s run of dominant starting pitching continued Sunday as Eric Potter went 7.1 strong innings, leading the Terps to a 3-1 victory  over Army. The win completed the Terps’ three-game sweep of the Black Knights and pushed their record to 5-3.

After running into some early trouble, Potter rounded into shape in the later innings and at one point retired 12 straight Black Knights. He tallied six strikeouts on the day while allowing only one run on four hits.

The Terps hadn’t scored runs in consecutive innings all year before pushing across runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to come back from an early 1-0 deficit and make it a 3-1 game. A Tomo Delp sacrifice fly, Curtis Lazar RBI single and Jake Stinnett RBI groundout accounted for the Terp scoring.

Reliever Chuck Ghysels, who projected to be the team’s closer before the season started, had struggled in recent outings. But he came in and worked out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth inning, and closed the door in the ninth to earn the save.

Check in tomorrow’s Diamondback for a full recap of the weekend.

Women’s Basketball: Halftime update

Chestnut Hill, Mass. – The No. 15 Terps went into the locker room on a high-note after guard Kim Rodgers knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer to put the Terps up, 38-28, over Boston College at the end of the first half.

It was perhaps the best defensive half for the Terps since ACC play began. The team was in a man-to-man set for much of the first half, and didn’t give BC any room with the ball. The Eagles turned the ball over 11 times (including three from talented point guard Jaclyn Thoman) and the Terps’ held all-ACC center Carolyn Swords scoreless.

While center Lynetta Kizer (11 points) and Rodgers (nine points, four assists) have led on the scoresheet, reserve point guard Dara Taylor’s play was perhaps the most impressive. She was able to frustrate Thoman throughout the first half, forcing turnovers, poor decision and shots late in the shot clock.

Kizer and center Alicia DeVaughn have combined to shut down Swords. BC has found some success from beyond the arc (3-for-8) when they’ve been able to shake the Terps’ defense.

The Terps have once again shown an increased interest in shooting from the perimeter. The Terps were 3-for-10 from deep, with guard Anjale Barrett drilling both of her attempts.

Be sure to check out tomorrow’s Diamondback for a full recap of the Terps’ regular-season finale.

Women’s Basketball: BC pregame

Chestnut Hill, Mass. — We’re about 30 minutes away from tip-off here at Conte Forum, where the No. 15 Terps will look to finish their regular season on a high-note against Boston College.

The Terps are playing with the possibility of earning a first-round bye in next week’s ACC Tournament. If the Terps beat the Eagles (18-10, 5-8 ACC) and Georgia Tech drops their season finale this afternoon to No. 12 Miami, the Terps will get the fourth spot and a break until next Friday.

But BC presents an interesting matchup for the Terps. The Terps lost to the Eagles at Comcast Center in January, and BC’s inside-out attack — with all-ACC center Carolyn Swords in the paint and sharpshooters Jaclyn Thoman and Kerri Shields on the perimeter — could present problems for the Terps, whose well-established post-dominance is rarely supplemented with a perimeter attack.

It’ll be interesting to see if freshman guard Laurin Mincy can build off her huge game against Virginia Tech. She knocked down four 3-pointers against the Hokies on Thursday in a game where the paint was clogged and the Terps were forced to attack from the perimeter. Mincy’s efforts opened up the paint in what otherwise may have ended up being a crippling upset for the Terps.

I’ll check back in here with a halftime update. In the meantime, follow me at http://twitter.com/Conor__Walsh for live updates throughout the first half.

Softball: Terps Split, Advance to Championship

The Terrapin softball team swept games against Connecticut and Jacksonville as the offense did just enough to push the Terps into the championship game of the Strike Out Cancer Tournament at FAU.

In the first game against Connecticut, Ashley Czechner pitched six innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five in a 3-1 win. Sarah Acosta and Kathy McLaughlin had multi-hit games and RBI for the Terps while Kerry Hickey added another RBI as well. The Terps spread their runs out over the game, scoring in the third, fifth and sixth.

The second game against Jacksonville, a 2-1 victory, was the second game of the weekend to go into extra innings for the Terps. Marisha Branson singled in Courtney Kane in the top of the eighth for her second game-winning RBI of the weekend. Kendra Knight pitched all eight innings, allowing the one run on two hits and six walks, striking out eight. Knight did not allow a hit after the second inning in her victory.

The Terps take on Pittsburgh tomorrow at 1 p.m. in a re-match of Friday’s game that the Terps won 1-0 in eight innnings.
