Baseball: Terps beat Army, secure series win

The Terrapin baseball team defeated Army, 3-0, at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium on Saturday to secure their first series victory of the season. The win pushed the team’s record to 4-3, putting them above .500 for the first time all year.

The Terps jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez scored on a groundout and left fielder Brandon Padula followed with a solo shot to left field, his first home run of the season. An RBI single from center fielder Korey Wacker scored Rodriguez in the fifth.

David Carroll followed up his dominant start against No. 6 Texas last weekend with another solid effort, going 7.1 innings while striking out four and holding the Black Knights scoreless. Michael Boyden came on in relief and worked out of a bases loaded, one out jam to help secure the victory. He would earn the save as well, getting a strikeout with the tying runner at the plate in the top of the ninth.

Men’s Lacrosse: Georgetown pregame

The Terrapin men’s lacrosse team faces its first stiff competition of the season today against Georgetown.

The No. 14 Hoyas (1-0) defeated Jacksonville last weekend, 15-12, while the No. 3 Terps opened the year with a 16-4 victory against Detroit Mercy.

This is the 11th meeting between the two teams, with the Terps leading the “Battle for the Beltway” series 8-2. The competition between the two squads has ratcheted up in recent years, splitting games alternatively since the 2006 season.

A team spokesman verified that all the players that were out last week with an injury are dressed today. Most importantly, long pole Brian Farrell and midfielder Dan Burns are expected to play. (Although, neither are listed as starters.)

On Georgetown’s side, starting attackman Zac Guy, who scored a goal and dished out an assist last weekend, will not play today after suffering a thumb injury against Jacksonville.

Today’s probable starters:

MARYLAND

Attack – Grant Catalino, Travis Reed, Ryan Young

Midfield – Jake Bernhardt, Owen Blye, Joe Cummings

Defense – Max Schmidt, Brett Schmidt, Ryder Bohlander

Goalie – Niko Amato

Face-off – Curtis Holmes

GEORGETOWN

Attack – Rickey Mirabito, Travis Comeau, Davey Emala

Midifeld – Max Seligmann, Zack Angel, Dan McKinney

Defense – Barney Ehrmann, Dan Hostetler, Bobby Boyle

Goalie – Jack Davis

Face-off – Brian Tabb

Baseball: Terps walk it out, beat Army in 13

It took 13 innings and nearly five hours at a cold and blustery Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium, but the Terrapin baseball team got a win in their series-opener against Army.

Sander Beck continued the team’s run of quality starting pitching, going six innings while allowing only three runs and racking up a career-high 11 strikeouts. Those three runs came in the top of the third inning, but the Terps scored two an inning later with center fielder Korey Wacker scoring on a wild pitch and Jake Stinnett RBI groundout plating DH Brandon Padula.

Third basemen Jake Stinnett hit a sac fly that scored Jordan Hagel, and Michael Montville scored after the Black Knight throw trying to catch him advancing to third on the play got away from the third basemen Steve May.

The Terps bullpen allowed two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth. With Army leading 6-4 heading to the bottom half of the eighth, catcher Jack Cleary hit a two-RBI single to right field to tie it up. Cleary tried to take the lead one batter later, heading home from second on an infield single just to be tagged out.

The Terps and Black Knights would then play four scoreless innings, with the Terps squandering several scoring chances in extra innings. But with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 13th, first baseman Tomo Delp drew a walk to score Cleary and give them their third win of the season.

Softball: Terps Split First Day in Boca Raton

The Terrapin softball team split the first day of the Strike Out Cancer Tournament at Florida Atlantic University today, beating Pittsburgh 1-0 in eight innings before falling to Kent State by a final score of 5-3.

In the first game, Kendra Knight and Kerry Hickey combined for a one-hit shutout over the Panthers. Knight pitched the first 7.2 innings, striking out 16, walking two and allowing the only hit of the game, which came in the fourth inning. Knight started the game by striking out eight of the first nine batters she faced. Hickey (2-1) came in to get the last out of the eighth inning, a strikeout.

However, Pittsburgh’s Karlyn Jones was able to befuddle the Terps bats as well. Jones pitched the first four innings, allowing only two hits and striking out two batters. Then Cory Berliner came in, pitching the final 3.1 innings. Berliner gave up the winning run, a walk-off single to shortstop by Marisha Branson that scored Sarah Acosta, giving the Terps the 1-0 final. For the game, Berliner (0-1) gave up three hits and a walk, striking out six Terps. Bree Hanafin led the Terps offense again, going 2-for-3.

However, the momentum from the walk-off win did not carry over into the second game, as Kent State took the Terps down, 5-3. The Terps managed to outhit the Golden Flashes, 8-6, but this did not carry over to the scoreboard, as they stranded seven Terps on base.

Kent State scored one in the first, three in the third and then topped it off with another in the sixth to get the win off Hickey (2-2). Hickey went six innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks. She struck out six opposing batters. Lauren McNeil got the win for the Golden Flashes, going all seven innings and surrendering three runs on eight hits while striking out three Terps.

Acosta, Hickey and Lauren Ghent all went 2-for-4 to lead the Terps offense.

The Terps face off against Connecticut tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. before taking on Jacksonville at 11 a.m.

Women’s Basketball: Breaking down the standings

With Sunday marking the final day of the ACC’s conference schedule, it seems now’s as good a time as ever to break things down a bit for the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C., next weekend.

I’m just going to focus on the top-six teams (No. 7 B.C. can’t move up). Duke controls its own destiny for the top-seed. If they beat UNC in Durham on Sunday, Duke’s the top-seed. If they lose and Miami wins at Georgia Tech, Miami gets the top-seed.

Florida State could claim the second-seed with a Miami loss and a (likely) Seminole win over Clemson. FSU and Miami split the season series, so since FSU beat (in this particular scenario) top-seeded Duke, they hold the tiebreaker.

FSU can finish no lower than third.

So that leaves the coveted fourth-seed (and subsequent first-round bye) between the Terps, the Tar Heels and the Yellow Jackets.

Georgia Tech controls its own destiny with their win tonight over UNC. If they beat Miami (in Atlanta), they’re the four.

Should GT lose, that opens the door for the Terps, who own the tiebreak over both GT and UNC. A win over BC on Sunday and a Yellow Jacket loss would get the Terps the No. 4 seed.

Should GT and the Terps both win, then the Terps would finish fifth and UNC sixth, regardless of their result at Duke.

If the Terps lose, they could finish sixth with a UNC win.

I’d say it’s 50/50 between the Terps and Yellow Jackets for the four-seed. The Terps will likely come out on fire in Chestnut Hill, Mass., especially considering their upset loss at the hands of the Eagles in January. So it comes down the GT/Miami game. Miami won in overtime the first time they met in Coral Gables, Fla., and each team will have something to play for.

It’ll be interesting. I hope this makes some semblance of sense.

Women’s Basketball: Halftime update

Well that was ugly. While the Terps head into the locker room up, 29-22, on lowly Virginia Tech, it certainly can’t have been the kind of first half that coach Brenda Frese was looking for.

The Terps’ offensive attack never got into a rhythm. Occasional spurts — led by freshman Alyssa Thomas (nine points) — and solid defense allowed the Terps to maintain a lead through much of the first half, but it’s clear that the talent gap between them and the Hokies is staggering.

Frese was visibly unhappy through much of the first half.

We’ve yet to see guard Kim Rodgers. Curious if her knee, which was surgically repaired prior to her redshirt season in ‘07-’08, is acting up again.

Be sure to check out tomorrow’s Diamondback for a full recap of tonight’s game.

Women’s Basketball: VT pregame

With two games left and a logjam for the fourth first-round bye next weekend in the ACC Tournament, the No. 15 Terps got a pretty good draw.

They host Virginia Tech tonight, who’s, well, bad. They have two wins over power conference teams (Clemson and Vandy), and come to Comcast Center fresh off a 50 point loss to Duke on Sunday. They’re been beaten by an average of 17.6 points per game to conference opponents, and Terp coach Brenda Frese expressed confidence that that lack of Hokie success will continue tonight.

Terps fans’ attention will likely be split between Comcast and Chapel Hill, N.C., where UNC host Georgia Tech. The Tar Heels and Yellow Jackets are tied for fourth-place in the ACC, with the Terps — who own the tiebreaker over each — sitting one game behind in sixth. A win tonight will move the Terps into fifth place no matter what, and with GT hosting No. 12 Miami and UNC heading to No. 9 Duke on Sunday, the Terps still have a legit shot at a coveted first-round bye.

Men’s Basketball: Breunig (‘11) commits to Terps

Martin Breunig, a German-born 6-foot-9 forward from St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield, Wis., has committed to play for the Terrapin men’s basketball program, according to media reports.

A three-star prospect according to Rivals.com, Breunig took an official visit to College Park this weekend for the Terps’ game against NC State and had been considering offers from Virginia and several mid-major schools.

But Breunig pulled the trigger last night, becoming the third member of the Terps’ 2011 recruiting class.

From The Baltimore Sun:

“I saw [the commitment] coming because I spent the last two days with him,” said Martin Esters, the player development coach and international scout at St. John’s. “After the visit, he liked everything about it. He didn’t want to commit on the visit; he wanted to talk it over. … But last night he called, he’d been thinking about it, really liked everything about it, and he’s really excited about it.”

Breunig is the first big man in a haul that already included guards Nick Faust and Sterling Gibbs. The Terps reportedly had also been recruiting forwards Desmond Hubert and Greg Whittington, and it’s not yet clear what effect Breunig’s committment will have on the pursuit of the two, if any.

The Levurkusen, Germany, native has been stateside for only a few months, but he’s played well enough (14 points and 10 rebounds per game for St. John’s) to put together a pretty good-looking highlight reel.

Women’s Soccer: McDowell honored by ACC

The ACC announced today that senior defender Caitlin McDowell has been named the ACC Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The former captain, who’s set to graduate in May, carried a 3.94 GPA into this academic year as a marketing major, while also leading the Terps in assists from the backline.

She is joined by fellow seniors Colleen Deegan and Molly Dreska, as well as junior goalkeeper Yewande Balogun, on the ACC’s All-Academic team. It was the third time McDowell earned the honor, and the second for Dreska.

Men’s Basketball: Williams, Van Pelt rip student attedance

Since its construction, Comcast Center has earned a reputation as one of the loudest and most passionate venues in college basketball.

But the Terps’ victory over Florida State last night was not a proud one for the student section, which was hardly filled and drew the ire of coach Gary Williams.

“We need a full house against Virginia,” Williams said after the Terps’ 78-62 win. “Great game for those who showed up tonight.”

He wasn’t alone in ripping the thin ranks of fans. SportsCenter anchor and university alumnus Scott Van Pelt — who often attends games at Comcast and waxes poetic about Bentley’s after Terp highlights on ESPN — took to Twitter to bash the fan base:

To no one’s surprise, there was an electric atmosphere at the Terps-Duke game in early February. But as the Terps’ NCAA Tournament prospects have faded, so has student attendance.
