Softball: Terps Carry 11-Game Win Streak into Weekend

The Terrapin softball team opens a three-game series against Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., tomorrow fresh off a five-game sweep at the Maryland Round Robin tournament last weekend, giving the team an 11-game winning streak into this weekend’s set. The Terps haven’t lost since March 11, when they dropped a 6-4 decision to No. 14 Nebraska at the Under Armour Classic.

Last weekend, the Terps (20-9) dominated their opponents, outscoring them 28-1 during the weekend at College Park. Senior Kerry Hickey was named the co-ACC Pitcher of the Week for her performance during the weekend and earlier in the week against Fordham. Overall, Hickey went 3-0 and gave up only one run in 21 innings while striking out 27 batters.

Freshman pitcher Ashley Czechner was also dominant on the weekend for the Terps, going 2-0 on the weekend and pushing her record on the season to 8-1. She pitched 13.0 innings, allowing two hits, two walks and one run while striking out 29 batters total. The 16 Hampton players she struck out on Sunday was a new career high.

The Terps enter their first bout of ACC play against the Cavaliers, opening with a doubleheader on Saturday. Virginia is currently 0-3 in the ACC and 15-15 overall, and the team has lost six of its past seven games. This weekend’s series is the first real road test of the season for the Terps, who are 0-1 on the road, a Feb. 13 loss to Georgia at the Red and Black Showcase.

Women’s Basketball: Georgetown pregame

We’re closing in on tip-off here at Comcast Center, where the fourth-seeded Terrapin women’s basketball team and fifth-seeded Georgetown are readying for a battle for the Sweet 16.

It’s filling in pretty decently here, but I doubt we’ll see an attendance record of any kind today. The wall is empty, save for a smattering of Georgetown fans and some Maryland students who thought a short jaunt over to Comcast was a nice way to spend a night of spring break.

The back-and-forth between the two teams the past two days has been fun to follow, if not particularly inflammatory. We’ll see if any emotions spill over into tonight’s game, particularly with so much on the line.

As for starters:

Terps:

– G: Anjale Barrett
– G: Kim Rodgers
– F: Alyssa Thomas
– F: Diandra Tchatchouang
– C: Lynetta Kizer

Georgetown:

– G: Rubylee Wright
– G: Sugar Rodgers
– G: Monica McNutt
– F: Tia Magee
– F: Adria Crawford

More later.

Women’s Basketball: Terps ace first test

Before its Comcast Center matinee this afternoon against Saint Francis (Pa.), the Terrapin women’s basketball team hadn’t played in 16 days.

It showed against the Red Flash. But not in a bad way.

With a flurry of early points that hinted more so at a game refined by a two-week-plus layoff than one rusted by it, the Terps (24-7) dashed out to a commanding early lead before coasting to a 70-48 first-round NCAA Tournament victory.

The Terps next play Georgetown on Tuesday, with the winner likely earning the weighty responsibility of facing defending national champion Connecticut.

“Being able to get back to the tournament is a lot of fun for us,” center Lynetta Kizer said. ” Just going out and being able to step on the court again as a team and going out and being able to play for another run at this title is amazing for us.”

In the venue that last season served as a host site for the team’s run through the WNIT, the youthful Terps offered an emphatic reminder of just how different this year’s team is. They scored the game’s first 13 points before a media timeout had come to pass. Then, they scored 10 of the next 12.

It got as bad as 40-14 in the first half for the Red Flash (22-12), the Northeast Conference champion, and it never got any better than 41-19 in the second.

“I liked how we came out and we set the tone early. That’s something that we had talked about — wanting to come out and jump on them early,” Frese said.

Again, freshman forward Alyssa Thomas did much of the heavy lifting, finishing with a game-high 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting. Guard Anjale Barrett and forward Diandra Tchatchouang finished with 11 points apiece.

There were imperfections in the win, though. The Terps’ main season-long concern — turnovers — stretched into their second season. The team finished with 23, one fewer than Saint Francis’s two dozen, but it’s a cause for concern heading into another matchup against the press-happy Hoyas.

Check back later for more on the women’s team and other weekend updates.

Men’s Lacrosse: Terps top St. Joseph’s, win fourth straight

Attackman Owen Blye scored three goals and dished out two assists and attackman Ryan Young added a goal and three assists, as the Terrapin men’s lacrosse team defeated St. Joseph’s, 11-4, for its fourth straight victory.

The No. 7 Terps (6-1) cruised in the win, and despite committing a few unforced errors in the first half, they scored the game’s first seven goals and took a 7-1 lead into halftime.

For the second straight game, Blye, who normally runs on the Terps’ first midfield line, filled in for the injured Travis Reed at attack. The 6-foot-3 sophomore got the action started in the first half, scoring the game’s first goal after running around the crease from behind the net and finishing on a high-shot that beat St. Joseph’s goalkeeper Chris Moffa over the shoulder.

Blye continued to impress throughout the contest and scored the Terps’ fifth and ninth goals of the game en route to his first career hat trick. The Chester Springs, Pa. native recorded career highs in goals (three) and points (five) and tied a career high in assists (two).

“We have a lot of confidence in Owen,” coach John Tillman said. “With injury comes some disappointment – we obviously feel for Travis – but it also creates opportunities for other guys. Owen showed what he’s all about.”

The Hawks (0-6) tried to stifle the Terps’ offense by stalling whenever they had possession in the offensive zone, but the tactic didn’t help much, as the Terps were able to exercise patience and capitalized on their limited opportunities.

Despite the weak competition from St. Joseph’s, the Terps believe today’s game, which was played just two days after they topped UMBC, 15-6, will benefit them down the road when back-to-back games happen in the ACC and NCAA Tournaments.

“The one thing that was nice about today’s scenario was that if we want to be ACC Tournament champions, we’re going to have to play a game Friday night and then come back and play a game on Sunday,” Tillman said. “So we’ve gotten an experience like that. … We’ve gone through what it would be like.”

The Terps’ next game is at home Saturday against No. 6 North Carolina.

Wrestling finishes 18th at NCAA Championships

For the third straight season, the Terrapin wrestling team is a top-20 program.

Lead by the efforts of 165-pound Josh Asper, 174-pound Mike Letts and heavyweight Spencer Myers, the Terps finished 18th at this season’s NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Philadelphia.

Asper, Letts and Myers each finished the tournament with All-America Honors. Asper dropped a 5-4 decision to Wyoming’s Shane Onufer to finish in sixth place, while Letts defeated Central Michigan’s Ben Bennett, 7-2, to secure seventh place.

Myers, a true freshman, fell, 2-0, to Missouri’s Dom Bradley in the fifth-place match, but nonetheless secured a sixth place finish in his first ever championships. The top eight wrestlers in each weight class receive All-America honors.

As a team, the Terps compiled 35.5 points, which placed them 18th in the competition. Penn State finished in first with 107.5 points, while traditional powerhouses Iowa, Oklahoma State and Minnesota finished third, fourth and seventh, respectively.

Check The Diamondback on Monday, March 28 for a full recap of the Terps’ championship performance.

Men’s Lacrosse: Terps dominate UMBC in 15-6 rout

Terps lax

There was never really any question as to which team would walk off the field victorious in tonight’s lacrosse game played inside Byrd Stadium.

The Terrapin men’s lacrosse team jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first half and never looked back, cruising to an eventual 15-6 win over UMBC in front of 2,836.

“We felt like if we could jump on them and seize control, that would be really in our favor,” Tillman said. “I was proud of our guys with how much energy they came out with.”

The No. 7 Terps (5-1) were paced by career nights from attackman Grant Catalino and midfielder Joe Cummings.

Catalino tied his career high in goals with six and points with seven, while Cummings notched a career high in goals with four. On his third score of the game — an elevator shot that beat UMBC’s goalie Adam Cohen over the shoulder — Catalino recorded his 100th career goal, becoming just the 12th Terp to break the 100-goal plateau. The last Terp to do so was Joe Walters, who played from 2003-06.

“He’s the ultimate professional. No one puts more prep-time in terms of shooting and extra work,” Tillman said of Catalino. “He’s a terrific captain, and he’s our leader at that end. Nothing that he does surprises me.”

“That’s an honor,” Catalino said of the 100-goal plateau. “Playing for a prestigious school like Maryland and to be able to put up goals like that, it’s an honor. But again, it’s a tribute to my team.”

The Terps dominated UMBC (1-4) in nearly every facet of play, and looked good on offense, defense and in transition. The Terps won the statistical battle in turnovers (20-15), groundballs (40-22), face-offs (13-11) and shots (30-27) and went a perfect 3-for-3 on the extra-man offense while holding UMBC 0-for-4 on their man-up opportunities.

Twelve Terps ended up recording a point with Jake Bernhardt (two goals), Ryan Young (two assists), Drew Snider (two assists) and Kevin Cooper (two assists) providing support behind the stellar outings from Catalino and Cummings.

On defense, the trio of Max Schmidt, Brett Schmidt and Ryder Bohlander combined to force six turnovers, while freshman goalkeeper Niko Amato had another great game in between the pipes, stopping 12 Retriever shots.

Late in the first quarter, Amato made the save of the year by diving across the crease and stopping a point-blank shot by a UMBC attackman that seemed like it was inevitably going in.

“I turned to my defenseman, and I was like ‘Are you serious?’” Catalino said of the impressive move by Amato. “That save was unbelievable. He’s a great goalie. You expect him to make saves like that.”

Despite going on a 4-1 run to end the game, the Retrievers never truly threatened the Terps, who now have just one day of rest before facing St. Joseph’s on Sunday.

The Terps hope the short turnaround will benefit them when back-to-back games become the norm during postseason play in April and May.

“This is the second time in two weeks that we’ve had to do this,” Catalino said. “It’s great practice for the ACC Tournament and Final Four – two places we hope to be in the championship at. So playing games like this will help us get ready for those.”

TERP NOTE: Attackman Travis Reed, who suffered a shoulder injury against Towson last weekend, did not play against UMBC. Tillman said he was optimistic about Reed’s status leading up to tonight’s game, but the 5-foot-9 senior, who has seven goals and six assists this season, didn’t suit up against the Retrievers.

Tillman said after the game that Reed will be on the sidelines again Sunday when the Terps play St. Joseph’s.

“He’s a little bit farther away,” Tillman said. “We’ll see how he does next week.”

Men’s Lacrosse: UMBC Pregame

The Terrapin men’s lacrosse team is on the field warming up for its primetime matchup against UMBC.

The No. 7 Terps (4-1) are looking to turn around their recent history against the Retrievers (1-3) tonight. UMBC has beaten the Terps three of the last four matchups between the two teams, but this isn’t the same UMBC team that won three straight America East titles from 2008-10.

The Retrievers are on a three game losing streak heading into tonight’s matchup and lost to Johns Hopkins, 16-5, last weekend. Meanwhile, the Terps have won two straight after dropping their ACC-opener to Duke in overtime, 9-8.

The biggest item to note pregame is that attackman Travis Reed, who suffered a shoulder injury in the Terps’ 8-4 win over Towson last weekend, will not play tonight. Replacing him on attack is Owen Blye, who usually owns a spot on the team’s first midfield line. Byle’s spot on the top midfield line will be filled by Drew Snider. I’ll make sure to get more on Reed’s injury postgame.

Tonight’s starting lineups:

MARYLAND

Attack — Grant Catalino, Owen Blye, Ryan Young

Midfield — Jake Bernhardt, Joe Cummings, Drew Snider

Defense — Max Schmidt, Brett Schmidt, Ryder Bohlander

Goalie — Niko Amato

Face-off — Curtis Holmes

UMBC

Attack — Joe Lustgarten, Rob Grimm, Scott Jones

Midfield — Zach Linkous, Scott Hopmann, Dave Brown

Defense — Tim Shaeffer, Aaron Veradi, David Stock

Goalie — Adam Cohen

Face-off — J.D. Harkey or Joseph Impallaria

Be sure to check back later for a full game recap, and follow me on Twitter for live, in-game updates on tonight’s action (if of course, you can turn your head away from all the madness that is college basketball in March).

Men’s Basketball picks up first ‘12 commit

With the start of the NCAA Tournament first round today, the Terrapin men’s basketball team picked up great news despite sitting on the sidelines. Coach Gary Williams picked up his first 2012 commitment in Montrose Christian star Justin Anderson.

Anderson chose the Terps over North Carolina and Virgina. He announced his decision on Comcast SportsNet earlier today.

“Maryland started recruiting me since my first year on the AAU circuit, which was sixth grade,” Anderson said to the Washington Post. “Ever since then, I’ve known about them, not to say they were always my favorite.”

Anderson is a Super 60 ESPNU recruit that is powered by his athleticism and defensivive abilities. He has scored about 14 points a game in his junior season, but said he plans to work on his shooting this offseason.

“Maryland it is baby, #terpnation,” Anderson tweeted earlier today.

Judging by recruiting rankings, Anderson is a good start (and some believe huge get) for the Terps in the 2012 class. He will join former Terps Greivis Vasquez and Adrian Bowie as Montrose Christian alums in College Park.

Softball: Terps Beat Fordham 7-1 in Game One

Strong pitching and early offense from the Terrapin softball team led to a 7-1 victory over Fordham in the first game of tonight’s doubleheader.

The Terps jumped out early, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings. Outfielder Sara Acosta led off the game with a double and advanced to third on a single by fellow outfielder Vangie Galindo. Infielder Bree Hanafin got the team on the board with a double to left-center that scored Acosta and advanced Galindo to third. After a popout by pitcher Kerry Hickey, infielder Marisha Branson laid down a squeeze bunt to score Galdino and advance Hanafin to third, and then Branson took advantage of a lapse in focus by Fordham to advance to second. The Terps couldn’t capitalize on the runners on base, as two strikeouts with the bases loaded ended the inning with a 2-0 lead for the Terps.

Two more runs in the bottom of the second pushed the Terps’ lead to 4-0. Outfielder Amanda McCann led off the inning with a walk, and consecutive bunts put McCann on third and Galindo on first with one out. Then Hickey delivered a two-out double to right to score both runners and put the Terps ahead 4-0.

Hickey was on for the Terps, not allowing a hit until 4.2 innings in when a bloop single got over Carroll’s head at third. For the game, Hickey allowed one earned run on six hits and one walk, while striking out 10 Fordham batters.

The Terps added three more in the fifth behind hits from Branson, Carroll and McLaughlin, a steal from Lauren Ghent and a home run from Candice Beards.

Fordham strung together three hits in the top of the seventh to get one back, but Hickey got out of the inning, preserving her complete-game victory.

Galindo, Branson and McCann each had two hits to lead the Terps, while Galindo scored twice and Hickey had two RBI.
