Admin: Athletics subsidies high for Terps

According to a USA Today report, the Terrapin athletics department is among the highest nationally in “athletics revenue” allocated from institutional/government support or student fees. In other words, Athletics Director Kevin Anderson needs a lot of outside help to offset shortfalls in revenue from ticket sales.

Here’s a list of the four most subsidized universities out there:

1.) Rutgers $26,867,679
2.) Connecticut $14,578,029
3.) South Florida $14,185,037
4.) Maryland $13,749,781

But that figure could be a bit misleading.

According to The Washington Post, a good portion ($9.4 million) of that $13.7 million comes from student fees. And nearly a quarter of the $9.4 million is devoted to athletics (tickets, etc.).

One thing’s for certain: A packed-to-the-nosebleeds Byrd Stadium and Comcast Center will help make Anderson’s life and budget-balancing a lot easier.

Men’s Basketball: Remembering Bias

Twenty-five years (and a couple of days) ago, Len Bias died. The circumstances of the former Terrapin men’s basketball star and NBA lottery pick death were tragic and unforgettable.

But, boy, could he play. (And dunk.) A trip down memory lane …

Women’s soccer: Pensky adds transfer

Former Penn State women’s soccer forward Hayley Brock has transferred to this university, where she will have three years of eligibility, the team announced last week.

Brock, who finished with 15 points (six goals, three assists) in her freshman year with the Nittany Lions, an NCAA Tournament squad, has experience as a member of the U.S. U-18 Women’s National Team pool. As a high school senior, she was named the NSCAA Youth-All American Player of the Year.

She is the second Penn State player in as many years to head south to College Park. Midfielder Rachel Lamarre also joined the Terps after her freshman year in 2009.

Brock joins a Terp squad teeming with attacking talent. Of last season’s leading scorers, only defender Caitlin McDowell (graduated) will not be seen at Ludwig Field this fall.

Football: News and notes

It hasn’t exactly been a quiet summer thus far in College Park for the Terrapin football team.

To recap the latest, alphabetically:

Haroon Brown: The fifth-year fullback is set to graduate this summer and won’t return to the team next season. Brown joins defensive linemen Ian Davidson and Derek Drummond, linebacker Ben Pooler, quarterback Jamarr Robinson and fullback Taylor Watson as Terps to earn that distinction.

Ryan Donohue: The solid-if-unspectacular reserve linebacker is leaving the team, joined by …

Gary Douglas: The fellow junior, a running back, didn’t get much run last year. During a 2010 season limited by injury, Douglas rushed for 81 yards and amassed 78 yards through the air.

Cliff Tucker: You probably know who he is. Well, that whole guard-to-the-gridiron angle he was aiming for has fizzled out. The recent graduate won’t be seen next year at Byrd Stadium, having not been offered a football scholarship by Edsall.

Michael Williams: Madieu’s younger brother, a standout at nearby DeMatha who’d inked with the Terps’ 2011 signing lass, has relinquished his Terps football scholarship to compete in track and field at a school likely not in College Park.
