PINEHURST, N.C. — Among the tired, repetitive questions that seemed to dominate the hour-plus reporters spent with Terrapin football coach Randy Edsall early this week at the ACC Kickoff, one in particular seemed to get him going:
How do you feel about opening the season against a team like Miami?
Not particularly great, apparently.
“I don’t prefer it,” Edsall said. “But, I didn’t have much say in the matter. … You know, the only thing that we can do is just play the schedule that’s given to us.”
Local would-be pushover Towson, initially, was the team set to help the Terps kick off their season in grand style.
Then the ACC called, according to Edsall, and a cushy opener became an earlier-than-expected test.
“Because of TV obligations that the ACC has with our TV partners, they have a slot there for that game, and that game has usually been Florida State-Miami. And this year, they decided to change that, and that’s what they did.”
The Sept. 5 game will be the first time the Terps draw the curtains on their season in an ACC game since 2001. Coincidentally, that matchup — a 23-7 win against the John Bunting-coached Tar Heels — was former coach Ralph Friedgen’s first as Terp coach.
