Volleyball Handles Howard With Ease

Kara Bates had 13 kills, pacing the Terrapin volleyball team in their 3-set sweep over Howard.

The Terps (7-5) defeated the Bison in dominating fashion by the scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-15.

Defensively, the team was led by Lisa Scott (6 blocks) and Maddi Lee (4 blocks). Freshman libero Sam Rosario recorded 10 digs.

Overall, this was a much better outing for the Terps than last night, when they lost in four sets to VCU.

The team plays again tonight at 7 against UMBC. Check back for updates (football? so what?), and look for a full article Monday on www.diamondbackonline.com

Volleyball Loses in Four Sets to VCU

On a night where the Terrapin Volleyball showed some excellence on the defensive side of the ball, their good play was overshadowed by the amount of errors they committed.

The Terps (6-5) lost to VCU in four sets by the scores of 25-21, 19-25, 25-22 and 25-20.

After the second set, it looked as if the Terps might pull off the victory. In a decisive moment of the set, Lisa Scott recorded back-to-back blocks to put the team up 12-10. They eventually won the set 25-19.

But after the second set, it all went downhill for the Terps. They committed 42 total errors on the night, with 24 coming on the attack and 10 from serves.

So, after a dissapointing performance in tonight’s game, the team will try to rebound tomorrow against Howard at 1 and UMBC at 7.

TERP NOTE: Freshman libero Sam Rosario went down with what appeared to be a back injury on the 18th point of the fourth set, but she returned to action after a timeout a few minutes later.

Look for updates here tomorrow, and a full article on www.diamondbackonline.com on Monday.

Volleyball Wins Season Opener

The Terrapin volleyball team won it’s season opener against Stony Brook last night 3-2.

The Terps were led by sophomore outside hitter Maddi Lee, who had 24 kills and a .449 hitting percentage, both career highs. Her kills helped the team gain momentum at crucial points in the match, including her six that came in the second game helping the Terps win 25-21.

The team also had significant contributions from the freshman class. Kara Bates had 20 kills, 10 digs and a .385 hitting percentage. Taylor Jones accounted for 54 assists and 4 blocks, while Sam Rosario had 19 digs, a team high.

Overall, the match was a back and foth affair that finished with an exciting fifth set where the Terps prevailed 15-9. The match ended on a Stony Brook attack error made by Jeanette Gibbs.

The Terps play again today against Youngstown State at 1 and Villanova at 7.

Look for a more detailed report of all this weekend’s action plus a season preview for volleyball in Monday’s edition of the Diamondback.

Terrapin Volleyball Set to Start Saturday

I hate to break this long line of football reporting, but there are other sports being played this fall in College Park, one of them being volleyball.

The Terrapin volleyball team is set to make its first appearance on the Comcast Center Pavillion’s floor since last season this Saturday at 4 p.m. The Terps are hosting their first ever Alumni Scrimmage, and hope that it will become an annual event.

The team has been practicing since August 10, and although this match will not count toward any formal record, it will be the first outside competition the team has seen coming into their second season under coach Tim Horsmon.

After Saturday, the team only has six more days of preparation before the 2009 season begins. The Terps start the season off in the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational on August 28, and will play Stony Brook, followed by Youngstown State and Villanova the next day.

It will be interesting to see how the Terps have adjusted in their second season behind Horsmon’s coaching. The first one did not go very well as the team went 6-26, the lowest win total in program history. The three game tournament should show how much they have progressed in his system.
