Men’s lacrosse Terps v. Duke highlights

March 9th, 2010 01:35 am by Kate Yanchulis

To really understand the final play of the Terps’ 11-10 overtime victory over Duke on Saturday, you need to see it for yourself.

But if you weren’t at M&T Bank Stadium to witness the win in the Konica Minolta Face-off Classic live, you’re in luck. Inside Lacrosse, the sponsor of the event, compiled a three minute highlight reel of the game.

Of course, in a game that goes to sudden-death overtime, the top highlight will always be the play that led to victory. But while attackman Grant Catalino’s goal sealed the win, and the mad offensive dash downfield to set it up will wow you, you really should pay attention to the play’s beginning at the opposite end of the field.

Spring men’s soccer update

March 8th, 2010 04:04 pm by Jonas Shaffer

The Terrapin men’s soccer team kicked off its impressive spring schedule Sunday at Ludwig field with a largely inconsequential 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace FC.

The main storylines from Sunday, though, weren’t who the Terps played, but rather with whom they played.

Coach Sasho Cirovski learned early last week that the NCAA had awarded sixth-year midfielder Doug Rodkey another year of eligibility. The slick midfielder, who started regularly last season before breaking the metatarsal bone in his right foot in September, looked like his old self Sunday, slicing up the right flank and nutmegging defenders with regularity.

On the flip side, the Terps were without the services of defensive midfielder Matt Kassel and defenders Ethan White and Alex Lee.

Kassel is recovering from hip surgery and will likely miss the spring, while White is nursing an ankle injury and may also sit out the spring.

Cirovski said Lee hopes to be cleared by early April, but he likely won’t see action in the team’s scrimmages. Lee, who missed the season’s final 10 games after he was struck by a car last October, should be fully cleared for action this summer.

Baseball sweeps Hofstra

March 8th, 2010 03:44 am by Michael Lemaire

It’s always a shame when the print edition of The Diamondback doesn’t have enough space for all of the sports. Despite the Terrapin baseball team’s best three games of the season, there are just too many good teams at the university and that means baseball gets pushed to the blog.

But that won’t stop me from bringing you all of the news and notes from the weekend. The Terps (5-6) opened with a 6-3 victory on Friday afternoon, and finally opened up offensively on Saturday in a 10-3 win. They capped off the weekend with a 7-5 win on Sunday made possible by some late-game heroics.

In some sense getting to recap the weekend on the blog is better, not just for the amount of additional space I am afforded, but also because it allows me to be a little bit looser with the laws of traditional journalism. So rather than write a traditional weekend recap like you would expect to find in the newspaper, I will just break down the major storylines as I saw them.

Halftime: Terps 38, Virginia 27

March 6th, 2010 02:35 pm by Eric Detweiler

The Terps came into this one hoping to hold serve against a struggling Virginia squad after an emotional home upset of No. 4 Duke.

So far, so good.

Without suspended star Sylven Landesberg, the Cavaliers have struggled to find an identity. They’ve used a 10-man rotation on Senior Day.

They also have gotten handled on the boards. I mentioned earlier, the Terps’ success rebounding the first time these two teams met. So far, the Terps have a 22-10 edge in rebounds. They’ve turned 11 offensive rebounds into 17 second chance points.

Greivis Vasquez leads the way with 10 points, but after a brief early spurt, he didn’t score in the last 12:52 of the half. No other Terp has more than five points, but all eight Terps to play have scored. The visitors have led by as many as 14 points.

There hasn’t been a whole lot of energy in the less-than-capacity John Paul Jones Arena, but the Terps, who haven’t trailed, have done everything they needed to do for the first 20 minutes.

Men’s lacrosse tops Duke 11-10 in OT

March 6th, 2010 02:20 pm by Kate Yanchulis

The Terps saw a three-goal lead slip away, then allowed Duke to control the first half of the four-minute overtime period. But then, with Duke readying for what could have been the game-winning shot, Bryn Holmes slammed into a Blue Devil attackman to knock the ball loose just outside the crease. Long pole Brian Farrell picked up the ground ball, and less than 10 seconds later the Terps had won the game.

Farrell rushed up the field before dishing the ball to midfielder Dean Hart, who fed a quick pass to attackman Grant Catalino on his left. Catalino, who already had four goals for the day, didn’t hesitate before whipping a shot into the cage. Within seconds, his teammates swarmed him, basking in their victory in front of a Terp-friendly crowd at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.

The No. 7 Terps (3-0) beat the No. 9 Blue Devils 11-10 for their second straight win over their ACC rival in the Konica Minolta Face-off Classic, but only after a back-and-forth effort that included five ties and four lead changes.

Though Duke had the first goal of the match, the Terps quickly responded with a three-goal run, including two from Catalino, taking the early lead. The Blue Devils then came back with a 4-1 run in the first 10 minutes of the second quarter, taking the lead again. But the Terps grabbed momentum back before halftime with two more goals. And after a the third quarter in which the Terps scored three goals on just four shots, put the Terps firmly in control heading into the final 15 minutes.

A goal with 13:47 remaining in the game, giving the Terps a three-goal advantage, the largest of the game, just seemed to affirm that the Terps’ dominance would continue. But after nine quiet minutes with no change in score, the Blue Devils mounted a comeback.

Duke scored three times in the last 4:22 of regulation to tie the game, finally using the advantage in face-offs, ground balls and shots they had held most of the game to good use in beating the Terp defense.

When the overtime period began, the Blue Devils’ dominance continued, as they snatched the face-off and held the ball in Terp territory for almost of the first two minutes. But a strong defensive stand, led by a save from goalie Brian Phipps and Holmes’ jarring hit, gave the Terps the window of opportunity they needed, and Catalino finished on the other end to give the Terps a reason to celebrate.

Virginia Men’s Basketball Pregame

March 6th, 2010 01:28 pm by Eric Detweiler

It’s a tradition for the Terrapin men’s basketball team to close the regular season against ACC rival Virginia. The teams have met in their ACC finales in 36 of the past 41 years.

That leads us to today’s contest at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va.

The Terps are trying to ensure themselves a share of the ACC regular season for the first time since 2002. Then, they’ll sit back and wait to see how No. 4 Duke fares tonight against North Carolina to find out if they can grab the top seed in the ACC Tournament.

To do that, they will have to win in this four year old arena for the first time. They are 0-3 here, including a 68-63 loss to close the regular season last year.

MLax halftime update: Terps 6, Duke 5

March 6th, 2010 12:11 pm by Kate Yanchulis

The Terps head into the intermission holding a 6-5 lead after grabbing the lead and the momentum in the last five minutes of a back-and-forth half.

Duke kicked off the scoring with a goal from attackman Ned Crotty, marking the first time this season they have notched the first goal of the game. But the Terps owned the rest of the quarter with three straight scores, including two from attackman Grant Catalino, points No. 99 and 100 in his career.

But led by a powerful attack, the Blue Devils came back with a flurry of shots, taking a 4-1 run in the first 10 minutes of the second quarter. All have Duke’s goals have come from their attack.

The Terps, though, took a timeout to regain their composure and then, 47 seconds later, tied the game off another Catalino goal, giving him a first-half hat trick. And then, for an exhilarating end to the first 30 minutes, attackman Ryan Young tricked the Duke defenders – and many in the stands and press box – by faking a pass to Travis Reed but actually flipping it to himself. Then, he fed it to an open Will Yeatman, who punched it in for a goal and a one-point lead.

Men’s Lacrosse: Face-off Classic pregame notes

March 6th, 2010 10:58 am by Kate Yanchulis

As fans fill M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore to see the No. 7 Terps take on No. 9 Duke in their ACC opener, already it’s clear that the crowd will favor the in-state squad – even if they’re technically listed as the “away” team.

The match between the Terps (2-0) and Blue Devils (2-1) kicks off a triple-header of games today at the Konica Minolta Face-off Classic. Two more local schools, No. 4  Johns Hopkins and No. 10 Loyola, round out the event with matches against No. 8 Princeton and No. 5 Notre Dame, respectively.

The Terps come in off a 15-13 come-from-behind victory at Georgetown last weekend, which coach Dave Cottle believes should boost their confidence coming into this conference rivalry. Duke also won last weekend, beating unranked Pennsylvania 16-11, but lost to Notre Dame the week before that, despite coming into the year at No. 2 in the nation. Though the Terps hold a 55-17 in the series, the Blue Devils have won two of the last three meetings.

Terps take down Virginia in WLax

March 5th, 2010 10:42 pm by Chris Eckard

Despite Virginia’s patented patient offense throughout the second half, the Terrapin women’s lacrosse team used a spurt of goals and stellar defense to runaway with a 11-5 victory on Friday night.

The No. 9 Cavaliers (2-2, 0-1 ACC) stalled for the first 10 minutes of the second half before the No. 2 Terps (4-0, 2-0) could form a possession that lasted more than a minute. But when they finally had the opportunity, the Terps used a flurry of passes to quickly sprint down the field, punctuated by a Sarah Mollison goal.

The sequence of events started an offensive run for the Terps to elevate them to the victory.
