If you had the chance to watch Good Counsel running back Caleb Porzel rush for more than 100 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone against DeMatha Catholic on Thursday night, you can understand why some Terp fans might be worried that Porzel’s verbal commitment to Ralph Friedgen might not stand.
I covered the game for George Solomon’s sports journalism class and got a chance to ask Porzel about his future.
“I like Maryland, they’re cool with me,” the 5-foot-8, 180-pound running back said. “I thought about [considering other schools], but the coaches at Maryland, Franklin and them, they like family to me.”
Still, it’s tough to imagine other, bigger programs didn’t notice the pint-sized, lightning-quick Porzel on Thursday night. Syracuse and Penn State had recruiters at the game, and many other schools will be taking an interest in Good Counsel football, if only for linebacker/fullback Jelani Jenkins, the nation’s No. 9 overall recruit according to Rivals.com.
