ACC soccer tournament: Terps’ practice update

Just got back to the hotel from the Terps’ light Thursday workout at the WakeMed Soccer Park. What I don’t understand is how there’s a Wake County, town named Wake Forest and WakeMed Hospital all in the general vicinity of Cary, N.C., yet the actual Wake Forest University is about an hour and a half west in Winston Salem. Ah, Nevermind.

More importantly, I have some injury info on two key freshmen starters. First the good news- forward Casey Townsend was jogging around the practice field fine and is probable for tomorrow’s semifinal against Boston College, (5:30 p.m., check the blog for updates!) according to coach Sasho Cirovski. The news on Kassel didn’t sound so positive. Cirovski labeled the Terps’ main set piece taker as questionable because of the right foot contusion he suffered in the first half of Wednesday’s 1-0 win against North Carolina. While he also did some light jogging, Kassel didn’t do much of anything else during practice.

Cirovski usually takes the Bill Belichick approach to discussing his players’ injuries, the only difference being unlike in football, where teams are required to list their probables, questionables, doubtfuls, etc., Cirovski really doesn’t have to do any of that if he doesn’t want to. I’m not saying Cirovski’s prognosis of Townsend and Kassel are intentionally meant to convey wrong information. I’m just saying the only way to really know whether the two are starting is to check the starting lineups around 5:15 p.m. tomorrow.
