Catching up with the Tar Heels

Well, this is strange.

It seems relatively quiet in College Park these days in the wake of the media frenzy that followed the Terrapin men’s basketball team last week. The hailstorm stemmed from the well-documented and much-opined public spat between coach Gary Williams and Senior Associate Athletics director Kathleen Worthington.

But with a win Saturday over Miami, and a public vote of confidence for Williams coming from Athletics Director Debbie Yow, the Terps are getting a much-needed — if momentary — respite from all the media critics and message-board rabble-rousers.

So let’s do the Terps a favor and take a look at some happenings with regards to their upcoming opponent. They face No. 5 North Carolina at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Chapel Hill.

Following the Tar Heels 80-77 escaping act at Florida State coach Roy Williams made no attempt to hide his disapproval of the play of star forward Tyler Hansbrough [from Fanhouse.com via the Tallahassee Democrat]:

“He didn’t play very well,” Williams said of Hansbrough, who missed the last 6:29 of the first half after collecting three fouls. “I told him he stunk tonight.”

Harsh. And the fun didn’t stop there as Tar Heels forward Mike Copeland mixed it up with North Carolina State’s Ben McCauley on Jan. 31. Video of the incident courtesy of the News & Observer.

Obviously, none of this is on the same level as the airing of dirty laundry between Williams and the athletics administration. It’s just nice to see some extracurricular excitement elsewhere in the ACC for a change.
