First half impressions vs. UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Yikes. The Tar Heel offense looks untouchable so far, and North Carolina has a 60-44 lead entering the second half.

Looks like it might be a long one, Terp fans.

  • The Terps seem to be rushing their shots a little. On one play early in the half, Sean Mosley drove to the basket, missed a layup, and Dave Neal attempted a 21-esque tap instead of controlling the ball and putting it up strong.
  • Some of the UNC faithful have taken to booing Greivis Vasquez every time the Terp guard touches the ball. No one should be surprised, though, as Vasquez receives special treatment from most opposing fans.
  • Tyler Hansbrough was dropped hard onto the court by Sean Mosley as he went up for a dunk. The intentional foul was called on Dino Gregory. The fans went crazy, then Hansbrough proceeded to knock down 1-of-2 free throws and a baby hook on the ensuing possession.
  • Terps are continuing a recent trend of zone defense. They can’t match up with the Tar Heels in a man-to-man, but UNC is proving fully capable of exploiting the zone as well. Do the math, no one in the NBA uses a zone. North Carolina has six players who could be first-round picks this year or next.
  • How is UNC exploiting the zone? They make it rain. Danny Green, Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington are unconscious from beyond the arc. The Tar Heels are 11-of-15 from 3-point range. Unbelievable display.
  • Ellington alone has 21 points
  • Little mini-run toward the end of the half narrowed what had been a 21-point lead with just 4:28 left to just 16 heading into the locker room.
  • For what it’s worth, the Terp offense hasn’t looked bad at all. 44 points by halftime isn’t, by any means, an embarassing number.

glad to see cliff tucker finally getting some minutes, and making the most of them.

shame we’re wasting our best offensive half with bad defense…
