Back from the pool…

Just got back from Eppley and night two of the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. It was another solid day for the Terps, who — along with the rest of the ACC — simply paled in comparison to the untouchable Wahoos. A little less than halfway through the competition and Virginia is already the heavy, heavy favorite to take the title again. They Cavs have shattered ACC records just about every time they’ve hit the wall.

I wasn’t able to get the most up-to-date standings, but here’s how things stacked up after the 50-yard free and before the 1 meter dive and 200-yard free relay.

  1. Virginia – 252
  2. North Carolina – 174
  3. Virginia Tech – 131
  4. Clemson – 96
  5. Maryland – 85
  6. Florida State – 84
  7. Duke – 64
  8. NC State – 42
  9. Miami – 39
  10. Boston College – 25
  11. Georgia Tech – 22

Sensational freshman diver Alisa Kurbatova reached the podium with a third-place finish in the dive event shortly thereafter.

Other notables: Yelena Skalinskaya finished sixth in the 50 free (22.67), Jen Vogel finished sixth in the 200 IM (1:59.65), and the 200 free relay team finished sixth in the 200 free relay (1:31.91). 6-6-6? Uh-oh, let’s hope there’s no deeper spiritual meaning to that.
