Terrapin men’s lacrosse flying high

Last Saturday, the Terrapin men’s lacrosse team ran into some trouble when the team bus broke down on the way back from New Haven, Conn., where the team had just beaten Yale.

Two weeks prior, the team bus got lost on the way to Penn. The Terps figured that out when they found themselves in New Jersey.

So it’s unsurprising that coach Dave Cottle wasn’t too upset when the Terps learned they’d have to fly to their NCAA Tournament first round opponent, Notre Dame. The Terps are the only team with a first round flight, and will travel on a chartered Boeing 737.

“It makes it easier, to be honest with you” coach Dave Cottle said. “You get a charter you don’t have to worry about all that. You just get a freakin’ plane, get on it, and get out of there.”

Well said.

Goalie Brian Phipps said the chartered airplane has taken a bit of the sting out of failing to secure a first-round home game.

“Everyone’s pretty excited about that,” said Phipps, who listed “backpack hiding” among the news-appropriate capers that go on during road trips. “The charter flight got everyone’s spirits up.”

Read on. Hilarity ensues after the jump.

Midfielder Jeff Reynolds was among those giddy for the ride, chuckling while realizing that it would be his first charter flight.

But Reynolds said he doesn’t expect any tomfoolery on the flight.

“I believe my parents will be there too, probably in the front, they get treated special,” Reynolds said. “We won’t really have shenanigans on the ride. It’s an early flight. We’ll be sleeping.”

SID Patrick Fischer ruined the day dreaming, noting that “this is not a luxory thing. This is not the Austin Powers plane.”

Reynolds still held out hope for some fun on the way back — given a Terp victory, of course.

“Hopefully on the way back, after we win, we can celebrate and party with our parents on the way back,” Reynolds said. “That’ll be fun. They can serve alcoholic drinks. Just Kidding…”

Sounds like fun.

But I still can’t grasp why the Terps wouldn’t want a standard flight, like the one I’ll be taking. I’ll be sure to let them know what they missed on my layover in Cincinnati.
