Two Terps garner softball honors

We’re less than 24 hours from the official start of the Terrapin softball postseason, and the regular season honors are starting to roll in. The ACC just announced that second baseman Breanna Shaw and pitcher/designated player Kerry Hickey were named to the all-conference second team tonight.

Shaw, a senior, has been the team’s best hitter for much of the season. It’s been by far the best season of her career, and she’s currently owns the 14th best batting average in the conference. She also leads the team in doubles and has the fewest strikeout of anyone on the team who plays with regularity.

Hickey, a sophomore, has been great on the mound and at the plate. Though she’d tell you that she’s struggled swinging the bat, she still leads the team in hits. She’s also 12-9 on the year with a top-10 ERA in the ACC (2.43) and leads the league in saves.

Coach Laura Watten will need both of them to live up to their billing tomorrow night against Virginia Tech. If the Terps win, they’ll probably play Georgia Tech on Saturday. Tune in to the Terrapin Trail all weekend long for updates.
