Yeah, it’s starting to become that time of year. The teams are finished playing, most students have moved out of their dorms here in College Park and any news comes out sporadically.
This summer might be a little different though, especially on the men’s basketball front. Greivis Vasquez’s impending NBA decision will certainly bring attention. Vasquez worked out with the Wizards last week.
Lance Stephenson, the 6-foot-6 recruit from Brooklyn who has yet to make a college decision for the fall, will attract his fair share of interest too. According to a report last week in USA Today, the Terps are still in the hunt for Stephenson. But this comes after most observers deemed the Terps out of consideration.
You can be sure coach Gary Williams doesn’t hope for a repeat of last summer’s drama. After a NCAA Tournament appearance in March, the Terps seem to be on more solid ground post-Memorial Day than last year.
The Diamondback will be following any developments in these stories and others all summer long, so check back often. Some other news items after the jump:
- The Washington Times’ Patrick Stevens reports that Terp men’s lacrosse goalie Brian Phipps should be back in time for next season after tearing his ACL in the team’s quarterfinal loss to Syracuse.
- Former women’s basketball star and current Washington Mystics rookie Marissa Coleman has a blog for Comcast SportsNet. So far, so good.
In her first entry Coleman describes one of the many ways having a new number can be confusing. Coleman’s No. 25 is honored in the Comcast Center rafters. She’s wearing No. 4 for the Mystics.
Also, with so many former Terps and former Duke Blue Devils in the Mystics’ locker room, things can get interesting.
- In a curious move, Clemson guard Terrence Oglesby is leaving Oliver Purnell’s program for a professional career in Europe. Oglesby apparently has a Norweigan passport and led Norway in scoring in last summer’s FIBA Under-20 European Championships.
Still, Oglesby struggled at times last season. He shot the ball too much from too far out and was a non-factor defensively. It all culminated in a NCAA Tournament meltdown against Michigan. Oglesby was ejected for this elbow after shooting 1-of-8 from the field, including six missed 3-pointers.

I like how in the Oglesby video our final shot doesn’t even hit the backboard. In fact, it goes soaring over it.
