It’s been pretty much known for a while that Lance Stephenson would not be coming to College Park. But ever since a surprise visit to Comcast in January by the uber recruit, Terps fans couldn’t seem to quit the Coney Island product.
Formerly the last major recruit left unsigned, it now appears Stephenson’s odyssey has finally come to a merciful end in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Stephenson will be a Bearcat. For the Terps, this is not a bad thing.
As Mr. Lemaire deftly pointed out yesterday, the Terps are already strong on the perimeter. It could even a bit crowded out there depending give or take the development of Adrian Bowie, Sean Mosely, and Cliff Tucker.
So sure, Born Ready would have been a splashy recruit. And there’s no doubt he would have scored plenty of points in Comcast. But the dude was not going to grow into a 6-10 low post presence during his one year rental. It’s just as well he take his sideshow somewhere else.
The real news here is for any remaining fans still harboring the pipe dream of suiting up the Terps’ first Burger Boy since Mike Jones. Let’s all take a deep breath and move on.
Greivis is back. There’s a pair of promising post players joining the cast. And let us not forget that this team is building off a surprise tournament win. (That’s NCAA, not NIT, mind you).
The Stephenson bromance was fun while it lasted. But with things looking up, the only mourning in Terpdom should be for departed Dave Neal. The Wet Bandit: now there’s someone worth missing.
