SUMMER LEAGUE TERPS
The NBA’s Las Vegas Summer League is done and three former Terps playing in Europe now were vying for roster spots.
Nik Caner-Medley LAC: 5 games, 5 starts, 11.2 ppg, 8 rpg, 1 apg, 50% field goal percentage. That’s solid work from the 6-foot-8 lefty swingman – probably the best he could hope for. But with a team like the Clippers, overloaded with developing prospects (Gordon, Griffin and Thornton) Caner-Medley’s performance will get lost in the shuffle.
He is getting some love in the Clippers blogosphere, for what that’s worth.
James Gist SAS: 5 games, 2 starts, 5.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 0.2 bpg, 35% field goal percentage. You get the sense he was hoping for better after he told us on draft night:
“I’m going to play for the Spurs this year.”
The addition of Pitt’s DeJuan Blair, seemingly everybody’s favorite second-round draft pick of all time, is going to hurt Gist’s chances of making that happen.
Ekene Ibekwe TOR: 3 games, 2 starts, 4.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 1 bpg, 46% field goal percentage. This certainly was an unfortunate thing to have happen in his Vegas run.
He can take solace in the fact that his block preserved a win for his team. But it seems as if Ibekwe is heading back to Europe next season. He averaged 18 and 8 in Turkey last year and is OK from the fall.
2009-2010 OFFICIAL ROSTER RELEASED:
Here it is. Freshman James Padgett grabs No. 35, formerly of Dave Neal and a little before that Lonny Baxter. The other frosh, Jordan Williams, gets No. 20.
If I was an incoming freshman and best hope for frontcourt production on a team that was severely lacking in that area the season before, I’d embrace my inner-center and go with a number in the 30’s. That’s just me. If I really wanted to get serious with it, I’d pick something in the 50’s. Whatever.
Everyone else will keep their numbers.
2009-2010 SCHEDULE, WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR:
Bits and pieces have been gradually coming out. Patrick Stevens at The Washington Times put what’s out there so far together last week.
Nov. 23-25: Maui Invitational (Arizona, Chaminade, Cincinnati, Colorado, Gonzaga, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin)
Dec. 1: at Indiana, Big 10-ACC Challenge
Dec. 6: Villanova at the Verizon Center, BB&T Classic
Jan. 3: at UNC-Greensboro
Don’t be alarmed by the random at UNC-Greensboro date. With the ACC Tournament in Greensboro this season, a bunch of teams are making the trip as a sort of warm-up for March, Clemson, N.C. State and Wake Forest included.
