The Terrapin football team’s third and final scrimmage of preseason camp was closed to the media this evening, so we had to rely on Coach Ralph Friedgen and a few players’ recollections about what happened.
Friedgen said he was pleased with the team’s performance and effort tonight, and said the defense played extremely well.
Linebacker Alex Wujciak said everything clicked for the defense, and he said defensively he thinks the Terps are ready for gameday.
The first-team offense played mostly against the second-team defense and the second-team offense played mostly against the first-team defense. Friedgen was happy with the Terps’ kicking, punting and return games, but said the Terps struggled with some kickoff coverage.
Torrey Smith returned a kickoff for a touchdown, and true freshman kicker Nick Ferrara made field goals from 45, 48 and 48 yards, while kicker Mike Barbour connected twice from 46 yards out.
Friedgen said he is still undecided about who will be the Terps’ starting kicker a week from Saturday against Cal.
“I would’ve said after Ferrarra made the first three long ones he was the guy. Then Barbour came in and was right with him,” Friedgen said. “So, game on.”
Friedgen said defensive lineman A.J. Francis and linebacker Drew Gloster were both “nicked up” during the scrimmage, but neither injury was serious.
He said wide receiver/punt returner Tony Logan hurt his shoulder the other day and is listed as day-to-day.
The Terps have one practice tomorrow and then two on Saturday, and then we’ll begin their regular season practice schedule on Monday.
