How Terps footballers get ready for class

September 2nd, 2009 10:48 am by Michael Katz

Yesterday, I headed to the Terps media luncheon to ask the players about their first day of classes.

As it turned out, school became the topic du jour when — As Adi noted —  Ralph Friedgen said, “Traditionally, the first day of school – I’ve got it marked down – is a disaster in practice.” But as the media inquired about juggling the responsibilities of the student-athlete, I delved into the nitty-gritty.

Everyone has different ways to handle the start of the new semester. I talked to receiver Adrian Cannon, center Phill Costa, and defensive lineman Travis Ivey. Follow the jump to see who is the neat freak, who rolled out of bed for a 1 p.m. class, and who skipped their back to school shopping. Then you can get back to your syllabus, of course.

Adrian Cannon grabs a quick breakfast on his way out the door in the morning, but he takes time to make sure he looks good before heading off to class.

Travis Ivey said he doesn’t mind when students stare or bug him about football. “I mean, it’s a little weird at first, but I’ve been dealing with it all my life so I’m used to it,” said the 6-foot-4 325 pound lineman. “I’m pretty large, so people look at me anyway.”

Phil Costa seemed the least stressed about classes. “I’m not wearing what I wore to bed, you know, but maybe a T-shirt and shorts while other people are wearing, you know, brand new clothes they just got.” He smiled sheepishly, adding “Not too much back to school shopping for me.”
