Ralph: Baltz Out at Least Two Weeks; Pinegar Has “A Bruise on His Butt”

September 27th, 2009 08:07 pm by Greg Schimmel

Terrapin football coach Ralph Friedgen discussed some injury news in the wake of yesterday’s 34-13 loss against Rutgers on his weekly teleconference with reporters this afternoon.

Punter Travis Baltz and right tackle Paul Pinegar were the two key guys who got hurt.

Baltz injured his left, non-kicking leg when he drew a roughing the kicker penalty in the first quarter yesterday. Friedgen said after the game Baltz had a sprained ankle, but he vaguely mentioned today that it was Baltz’s foot.

Either way, Friedgen said the area is extremely swollen today and it is still hard to tell the full extent of the injury.

Friedgen said the team’s medical staff is estimating Baltz will miss at least the next two weeks.

Friedgen said he’ll “see how it goes in practice” this week before he decides whether Nick Ferrara or Ted Townsley will handle the punting duties during Baltz’s absence. Friedgen said it would be hard to put Townsley in if he’s not confident Townsley can catch the ball, as Townsley dropped the snap on his only punt yesterday before picking it up and getting the punt off.

As for Pinegar, Friedgen said he is not sure yet if his right tackle will be ready to go against Clemson.

Friedgen said Pinegar got hit on one of Chris Turner’s three interceptions and didn’t return.

“It wasn’t that big a hit. I think he landed on his butt,” Friedgen said. “From what the doctors are telling me he has a bruise on his butt. We’re going to get it x-rayed and MRI’d and we’ll find out if it’s anything more serious than that. Hopefully it isn’t and we’ll have him back.”

Friedgen said left tackle Bruce Campbell looked rusty in his first game back after a turf toe injury he suffered in the season opener but Campbell held up well.

He said Jamari McCollough was limited to just a few plays in his first game back after the ankle injury he suffered in the season opener. Friedgen said McCollough was at about 85 percent and probably could have played more if the Terps used a zone defense, but the coaches worried about how McCollough would do playing a lot in the Terps’ man-to-man scheme.

Friedgen said he expects McCollough to be at full strength next week.
