Clad in their pink uniforms, and pink athletic tape for those who needed it, the Terrapin volleyball team dropped yet another ACC match, adding to their now five game losing streak. The pink uniforms were part of a breast cancer awareness fundraiser named “Dig Pink.”
Once again, the Terps (10-13, 2-8 ACC) were swept by an in-conference opponent. This time the culprit was Virginia (8-13, 3-7), who was coming off their own losing streak of three.
The five straight sweeps means the Terps have lost 15 straight sets, the worst in program history.
The Cavaliers were led by outside hitter Simone Asque’s stellar performance. Asque recorded 21 kills en route to a .306 hitting percentage. Aiding Asque in her effort was teammate Sydney Hill, who recorded a .571 hitting percentage on eight kills.
The Terps were dominated on front line play, but did see some good things out of Maddi Lee and Katie Usher, who had 10 and nine kills, respectively.
And although the Cavaliers played extremely well, the Terps once again shot themselves in the foot by committing a massive amount of errors. Perhaps the must unusual stat of the night was freshman Sam Rosario’s performance from the service line. The ACC’s leader in service aces recorded five service errors and not a single ace.
For the Terps, this loss is devastating. In a season where they are obviously in the lower tier of the ACC, tonight could have given them a much needed boost of confidence. Prior to tonight’s matchup, the Terps and the Cavaliers were tied for ninth place in the conference. But now, riding a 15 set losing streak, the Terps have hit rock bottom, and with Virginia Tech coming to College Park on Sunday, it looks as if it will only get worse.
