Field hockey wins eighth ACC Championship in overtime

The undefeated No. 1 Terps kept their perfect season in a nail-biting 3-2 overtime victory against the No. 3 Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Va.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first half, the first time all season the team faced a two-goal deficit, ACC Tournament MVP Katie O’Donnell shifted the momentum with 14 minutes remaining on the clock in the second half, putting the first Terp score on the board.

The goal reenergized the Terps, and less than a minute later forward Nicole Muracco capitalized on the new direction, scoring to tie the game 2-2.

Both teams stepped up from that point on, and the game remained knotted at the end of regulation.

But just two minutes into overtime, the Terps received a penalty corner. Though they had struggled on penalty corners on both sides of the ball, allowing Virginia its two goals on penalty corner rebounds and not getting any goals off the set plays, this time they delivered. Midfielder Megan Frazer knocked in the rebound of back Emma Thomas’ shot, securing the comeback victory.
