Mitch Kallick, a 2002 graduate of New York University, was hired, yesterday, as the new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator of the Terrapin volleyball team.

Kallick comes to the Terps after two seasons as an assistant coach at Cal-Fullerton.

“We are excited to have Mitch on board and think he will be both a great recruiter and trainer,” coach Tim Horsmon said in a press release. “He is energetic, passionate and will work hard to continue to move our program forward. I have known Mitch for a number of years and he has always impressed me with work ethic and I believe he will be a great fit and balance for our program. Our players will learn a lot from him in the gym and will like who he is on and off of the court.”

Prior to his stint at Cal-Fullerton, Kallick spent one year as an assistant coach at Tennessee and three seasons as an assistant coach at NYU.

While at NYU, Kallick helped lead the Violets to two Division III Final Fours and a second place finish in 2003. The NYU coaching staff was also named Coaching Staff of the Year in 2003 and 2004 by the University Athletic Association.

Kallick also boasts an impressive playing career. He was an All-American at NYU and holds school records in kills (1,925), blocks (543), block assists (399), points (2354.5), and sets played (417). He also played one year professionally in Portugal.

Now as a member of the Terp coaching staff, Kallick hopes that his prior experience will help in the development and progression of the team.

“I am really excited to be joining Coach Horsmon and Coach [Kortney] Norris as we continue to work and strive to get the program to the top of the ACC and to the forefront of discussion across the country,” Kallick said in a press release. “I consider it a great privilege to join a school that has such a rich athletic tradition like the University of Maryland.”

Last season, the Terps (14-19, 6-14 ACC) saw improvements from a disappointing 2008 campaign, but still acknowledged that they have a lot of work to do before making the NCAA Tournament.
