The Terps should count their blessings that this game is still scoreless, as Boston College came out of the gates absolutely flying and were all over the Terps in the first 10 minutes. Colleen Deegan turned away a shot on the endline and the Eagles rung a rocket off the crossbar.
But the Terps escaped unscathed, and the remaining 35 minutes were pretty even. The Terps’ best chance came around the midpoint of the half, when Caitlin McDowell and Lydia Hastings worked a pretty give-and-go in the Eagles’ end. McDowell broke free and threaded a ball into the box, where Ashley Grove redirected it on net. Eagles’ goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni was able to smotherit, though.
Coach Brian Pensky executed some unusual subs, taking out Jasmyne Spencer much earlier in the first half than usual. Similarly strange was Olivia Wagner coming in at attack, which, to my knowledge, was her first time up top on the year. Perhaps the move was to give the Terps a little more offensive spark late in the first half than reserve forward Erika Theisen has given them of late.
Some stats at the half:
Shots- BC 11, MD 6
Corners- BC 3, MD 1
Saves- Yewande Balogun (MD) 5, Jill Mastroianni (BC) 3
