800+-win coaches say the darndest things

A lot of times in the field of journalism there is an over emphasis on the quote. The sound bite is one of the most powerful tools in the business. But many times lost in the fray is the question that drew the quote.

On Wednesday, a simple question about the alleged phone calls by Terp fans to Duke players’ hotel rooms drew an interesting response by Duke coach Mike Kryzewski. After he brushed the calls off as no big deal and something that happens in many ACC towns, he launched into an impassioned plea for Terp coach Gary Williams and the program. With all that has gone on in the Terp program this year, every little bit counts.

It was the final question in Coach K’s nine-minute press conference, but it got a well-thought response that Kryzewski was obviously mulling about before walking into the room:

“People would be naive to think that over the years that people don’t try to do things. We have no problems. My relationship with Gary is the best,” Kryzewski said. “I admire Gary Williams and what he’s done with this program. And I admire the Maryland fans. Here’s a team that was 6-6. I think 6-6. 17 wins. They’re fighting. They’re out here as hungry as can be. I’m not going to pay attention if Jon’s picture is up. I admire their intensity, and I admire Gary’s team for what they’re doing. I mean, they’re fighting like crazy. That’s what he’s got here. I think he’s been here 20 years. We’re the same age. We came in together and all that. I think a lot of him. I think he’s as good as there is.”

Blessing or a curse?

At today’s scheduled media availability, Dave Neal and Landon Milbourne talked about the Terps being fortunate because their upcoming schedule is so difficult. Yes, they might have a greater chance to lose when playing a top-10 team, but there’s also the greater chance to prove oneself with a win.

Coach Gary Williams said he drilled that thought into his players’ heads.

“Any time you’re playing a ranked team and you’re not ranked, you can make a statement,” Williams said.

He continued: “As a coach you get your team to believe they can do certain things, and you try to get them done. That’s part of the thing I like as a coach–trying to get the team to understand that the possibility is always there. It’s not always what you hear. Especially today you hear so many negative things that you really have to be positive–make sure the players understand that this is the situation that’s left for us.

On the Tar Heels, Williams mirrored much of what was expressed in today’s Diamondback article.

“I think all good teams have that [quality inside and outside offense ],” he said. “It’s something we’ve seen before. Last game…they were on fire from the 3-point line, so you see that. But if you worry too much about that, they have Hansbrough and other inside players who are capable at scoring so there’s no easy way to play against a good team.

What about the players?

Amid this whole mess between the university Athletics Department and men’s basketball coach Gary Williams, it’s easy to forget that there are a dozen Terps players potentially reading the unrelenting news.

What are they thinking?

There has been no media availability since Tuesday night (immediately following the loss to BC) and there won’t be any availability to speak with players until after Saturday’s game against Miami.

I’m sure, even if the guys were available to speak, and you put a recorder in their face, the response would be something like, “We’re not focused on that. We’ve just got to work hard to get ready for Miami.”

But inside the Terps’ players heads, certainly there is something brewing if they have actively followed this week’s saga.

The whole muddle began with an in depth (Baltimore) Sun story chronicling the Terp’ recent struggles in recruiting.

Athletes, naturally are very proud people, and their reading of the article may be different than how a fan reads it. Probably, to some Terps, news about recruiting failures could be construed as “you’re not good enough.”

In saying that, I want to clear up that The Sun’s piece did not demean the current roster in any way — it only mentioned possibilities which could have occurred and for various reasons did not.

Regardless, it has to be tough for the young team to bounce back from four losses in five games when they have this extra cloud over their head. Williams may or may not have addressed the issue with his players. (My educated guess is that he certainly did not. And if he did, all he told his players to do was ignore it.) But the student-athletes aren’t naive enough to not recognize that there is a giant elephant in the room.

Wild and crazy Terps

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — You knew it was going to be an odd game when Gary Williams came out in a dark green suit. Maybe he’s trying to get rid of every possible bad vibe from The Clemson Collapse.

Nothing exemplified the weird first half more than this offensive sequence: Bambale Osby went for an alley oop pass, but James Gist didn’t follow up as he made a fake to the basket. The ball clanked off the rim, but Gist got the rebound and, as he was falling out of bounds, heaved a pass back to Osby. Osby then swung it over to Adrian Bowie, who badly missed a 3-pointer.

For much of the first half, it has been an out of control game – turnovers, poor shot selection, undisciplined offense and dumb fouls. Yet none of that will matter to the Terps if they pull out a win. Right now at halftime, they lead 37-36.

Shane Walker and Dino Gregory did not make the trip here to John Paul Jones Arena; each has a case of the flu that has bogged down this team for the past three weeks.

Gary’s “big” milestone

Gary Williams on the verge of win No. 600

Whenever a coach or player reaches some kind of impressive number that ends in “00” people seem to make a big deal about it. For instance, does anyone really care that Kristi Toliver has 500 career assists? Of course not.

Well, Terrapin men’s basketball coach Gary Williams is on the verge of win No. 600, so that will be the big talk going into Wednesday night’s game at Boston College, one of his previous coaching stops coincidentally. But should that overshadow the Terps’ play and the need to pick up what would be another big road win? No, and Williams will make sure it won’t. This isn’t his 500th win or his Terp-record 349th win with the program.

Earlier today, Williams addressed the “milestone” during his weekly 10-minute spot on the ACC Teleconference.

“At the end of the year, I’ll sit down and maybe look at it, but right now we’re playing Boston College,” Williams said. “That has to be the whole focus. I can’t be any different with the team than I am for any other game. In other words, you prepare for each game as it comes along. … You just try to get ready – it’s another tough road game, just like Georgia Tech was. You hope you can play well and get the win. That’s what today and tomorrow at practice will be about.”
