Terps’ recruit shatters backboard

I might be a little late on this since it happened Tuesday, but I recently heard that Terrapins’ recruit Jordan Williams, who attends Torrington High School in Connecticut, shattered a backboard Tuesday night while dunking the ball during a game at Naugatuck.

Finally, I’ve found video evidence of such a feat. (Not the greatest video quality, but does the trick)

“The crowd was talking to me the whole game, and I was getting aggravated and just took all of my anger out on the rim,” Williams said, according to the Republican American. “I just saw the ball go up off the backboard, and I jumped as high as I could and dunked the ball like I would normally do, but I guess it was a little harder than usual.”

With Williams’ team ahead 79-65, they had to replay the final 2:26 the next day after getting the backboard fixed.

Here’s the full game story.

Jordan Williams signs with Terps

Jordan Williams, a 4-star senior center from Torington, CT, officially signed his National Letter of Intent to play basketball for the Terrapins men’s team next season.

Williams averaged 28 points, 15 rebounds, 7 blocks and 3 assists last season at Torrington High School. Scout.com ranks Williams as the 16th best center in the 2009 class.

“At 6-10, Jordan is one of those rare players who can run the court very well, while being a traditional inside player,” said Gary Williams, whose Terrapins open the 2008-09 season on Friday at home against Bucknell. ” Jordan has great hands in rebounding and catching the basketball. He showed tremendous improvement over the past summer.”

The signing was no surprise, as it was reported last month thatJordan intended to sign with the Terps.

The National signing period continues through next Wednesday, November 19.

Men’s basketball nabs another recruit

Jordan Williams, a 6-8 245 pound forward from Torrington, CT, verbally committed to this university Monday, according to Scout.com.

He averaged 28 points, 15 rebounds, 7 blocks and 3 assists last season at Torrington High School. Scout.com ranks Williams as the 16th best center in the 2009 class.

Williams will join James Padgett–another four-star 2009 recruit–in the Terps’ frontcourt of the future.

St. Johns, Marquette, Massachusetts and Xavier are the other schools that Williams had considered before committing here.

The future Terp told SNY.tv, “My decision was based mainly on the academics. I want to major in criminal justice and Maryland has the top criminal justice program in the country. If something were to happen where I would get hurt and couldn’t play basketball, then I would have something to fall back on.”
