Down goes Frasor…

…and the Lawson-less North Carolina Tar Heels.

No. 22 Florida State  took down the top-ranked team in the country 73-70 just moments ago. In tomorrow’s championship game, the Seminoles will play the winner of Duke/Maryland.

Florida State really impressed me with their defensive athleticism inside.

And guard Toney Douglas who finished with 27 points, in my opinion, is the conference’s Player of the Year with the way he leads an otherwise unremarkable team on both ends of the court.

As for North Carolina, this certainly isn’t the worst loss. With the likes of Pittsburgh, Connecticut and Oklahoma losing early in their conference tournaments, UNC will still be a number one seed when the brackets come out Sunday evening. All they potentially lost was the top overall seed.

In the long run, getting an extra day of rest won’t hurt this team. Their chief goal all season has been to win the national championship after losing in last year’s Final Four and returning just about everyone important.

As long as Lawson returns from his big toe injury healthy, the Tar Heels will still be the prohibitive favorite to cut down the nets in Detroit.

We’re Talking about Practice?

Terp football coach Ralph Friedgen has never held an open practice for students the day before a game before. But with his team battling for ACC supremacy into the last three weeks of the season, he figured it was worth a try.

Weather permitting, Friday’s practice will be held at 3 p.m. in Byrd Stadium, and students can get in with a University ID. If practicing on the field would jeopardize conditions for Saturday’s game, the practice will be moved to its normal location-the turf fields behind the varsity team house.

“I’m trying to find some way to give a lift to our team,” Friedgen said. “I’m hoping [the fans] show up. Right now there’s no way of me knowing. We’ll see.”

Friedgen invited students through the athletic department’s student ticketing listserv in a mass e-mail sent Wednesday afternoon. The e-mail also encouraged students to be as loud as possible at Saturday’s game against No. 17 North Carolina.

Additionally, the first 100 students at Friday’s practice will receive a free t-shirt.

“I probably could have a few other motivating things,” Friedgen said. “But they probably wouldn’t fly right now.”

Maybe it’s best not to know exactly what he was talking about.

Dual Track Meets at Fetzer Field

Chapel Hill, N.C – So I am back in Chapel Hill. While it’s not quite as wild as last week, it was pretty nutty once again. The ride down included zero visibility due to torrential rain, but it did clear up.

Upon arrival at Fetzer Field, there was a track meet and it got very interesting. There were a lot of blowout races, but there was one controversial race that caught my attention.

A Tar Heel runner was leading the way on the 400 meter relay, but a runner from St. Augustine’s caught up and took the lead down the stretch run. With victory seemingly in hand, the St. Augustine runner pulled up and stepped off the track thinking she had completed the race. But she was three meters short of the finish line and was disqualified, that awarded the Tar Heel runner with the win.

The Terrapin women’s lacrosse team has now taken the field after the 30 minute delay. With the fast Terps’ offense there may be another track meet underway in a few minutes.

What a day

After a week of debating a trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the women’s lacrosse ACC/ALC Challenge, I finally made it down. But even the ride down caused some uncertainty. On the way, I found out that the game was pushed up an hour to 4 p.m. due to a thunderstorm threat.

I ended up getting there with just enough time to get dressed at Carmichael Fieldhouse and get over to Fetzer Field in time for the game.

After the crazy ride, things were just as nutty.

The press box had a unique guest, coach Cathy Reese’s newborn daughter, Cayden. Throughout the game sports information director Matt Lynch was attempting to be a babysitter, until a Tar Heel SID had to help him out.

Before this experience, Matt said he would see the newborn and want a baby. Now those feelings are now long gone.

Although watching Matt try to babysit was entertaining, the Terrapin women’s lacrosse game against Penn State was even better. It was only the third close game the Terps played all season, but by far the most dramatic. The Terps won the game in triple overtime when Kelly Kasper scored in the sudden death overtime period.

I can only hope that Sunday’s action, both on the field and in the press box, is as entertaining.
